PENSACOLA, Fla.- A well-balanced scoring attack was not enough for the UWF Men's Basketball Team as they fell to Auburn Montgomery, 81-72 on Tuesday night at the UWF Field House.
The loss drops the Argos to 1-1 while the Warhawks improve to 1-2 on the year.
The night started out well for West Florida as they built a 21-14 lead midway through the first quarter as sophomore forward
Daniel Sofield connected on three, three-point attempts. The native of Jackson, New Jersey finished with a team-high 18 points in the game.
UWF would go into halftime up 37-32 thanks to guards
Cameron Cox and
Akili Vining giving offensive assistance to Sofield. The trio were the only Argonauts to finish in double-figures as Cox and Vining had 12 points apiece.
AUM, however, dominated in the second half as they scored 16 of the first 23 points of the half. After a three-pointer by Argonaut guard
Tate Mulkey, Warhawk guards Maharrith Jackson and Jeremiah Bozeman took over as West Florida would not get within three points for the rest of the half, ultimately falling as the opponents feasted on free throws and West Florida's 15 turnovers. Jackson and Bozeman were the high-scorers on the night for Auburn Montgomery with 19 and 20 points, respectively.
The Warhawks lived at the charity stripe in the final half as they knocked down 26-34, and finished shooting 31-40 for the contest to West Florida's 19-25. UWF couldn't get enough going from the outside either as they shot 7-36 from downtown after shooting 41 percent in their last contest.
The Argos couldn't find their shooting stroke from the other night as they only connected on 30 percent of their total field goals compared to AUM's 43 percent output.
West Florida battled on the glass as well but fell in the rebounding department, 48-36, despite senior guard
Tarik Mckelphin collecting a game-high 14. Mckelphin also had a team-high six assists.
