PENSACOLA, Fla- The University of West Florida Men's basketball team opens up their season on the road against Sunbelt Conference opponent Louisiana Lafayette on Tuesday at the Cajundome for an exhibition game.

The Argos return starters Daniel Sofield, Wendell Matthews and Conor Flanagan to this year's team. In the Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches poll UWF was tabbed to finish eighth in the conference. 

Daniel Sofield averaged 15.2 points per game, scoring 49 three pointers and having 21 steals, being named to the GSC All Conference Second Team. Sofield was ninth in the Gulf South Conference in scoring. Wendell Matthews averaged 12.6 points per game with a career high 35 against Montevallo, averaging 4.8 rebounds a game and ending the season with 27 blocks. 

Rounding out the Argos returning starters is Conor Flanagan, who averaged 9.9 points per game, recorded a career high 28 points against Montevallo and finished with a season high 12 rebounds in one game. 

The team welcomes newcomers Brandon Burford, Jejuan Weatherspoon, Jackson Henningfield, LaTrell Tate, Rodney Bryant and Darrin Jenkins. 

With six newcomers West Florida adds depth and athleticism to this year's team, with a quick paced offense. 

Scouting Louisiana Lafayette- The Rajin Cajuns were voted to finish second in the Sunbelt Conference Preseason Poll. Louisiana Lafayette was first in the Sunbelt West with two first place votes and 125 points totals. 

Junior, Theo Akumba was named to the Sunbelt Preseason First team, coming off a season averaging 11.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 2.6 blocks per game. Akumba was also named Sunbelt Defensive Player of the year at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season. 

Sophomore Jordan Brown was named to the Sunbelt Preseason third team. Prior to transferring to Louisiana Lafayette, Brown averaged 9.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game, being voted the PAC 12 Sixth Man of the year.
