PENSACOLA, Fla.-
Conor Flanagan had a career-high 28 points, while all four of the other Argonaut starters scored in double-figures as the UWF Men's Basketball Team cruised by Montevallo, 85-75, on Friday night inside the UWF Field House.
"He (
Conor Flanagan) played well", UWF Head Coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "He really shot the ball well along with
Cameron Cox who I thought played his best game all season."
Â
The victory improves UWF to 5-8 on the season, while Montevallo drops to 4-5 on the year.
Â
Flanagan was on fire from start to finish in the match-up, shooting 10-14 from the field while hitting on an even more impressive, 8-10 from beyond the arc. On the night, West Florida connected on 13-26 from outside, their most three-point field goals in a contest this season. Sophomore
Daniel Sofield had three treys of his own, en route to 13 points for the game.
Â
UWF trailed for all of 18 seconds in the game as the Falcons made a three-pointer to open the game, but after that it was all UWF as the Argonauts led by as many as 15 points in the first half. The lead would stay above double-digits for most of the first half, before UM cut into the lead and made it a three-point contest, at 36-33, at the break.
Â
West Florida only shot 42 percent from the field in the opening period, compared to Montevallo's 39.4 percent mark. Braxton Bertolette had nine points to lead UM at the half, while Flanagan had 16 of his 28 for the home team in the first.
Â
The contest continued to be nip and tuck early in the second with the Argos holding a four-point lead, with 9:48 left in the game. Back-to-back treys from Sofield and guard
Cameron Cox on consecutive possessions, built the lead back up to 10 for UWF to put space between the two teams late in the match-up. Cox had a season-high 20 points and five assists for the Argonauts.
Â
West Florida got the lead all the way up to 12 with just over six minutes left, before Montevallo made it a six-point game two different times, once on a James McNeil three and again on an Ivan Smith trey with 56 seconds remaining. McNeil led all Montevallo players with 21 points on 8-13 shooting, with Smith adding 17 for the visitors.
Â
Guard
Tarik Mckelphin would knock down four free-throws to seal the game, finishing with 12 points and a game-high 11 boards.Â
Wendell Matthews rounded out the Argonaut starters, with 12 points himself.
