Box Score
CARROLLTON, Ga.- Four Argonauts scored in double-figures including
Akili Vining who had 17, but the UWF Men's Basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting West Georgia team, falling 77-61 on Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum on the campus of West Georgia.
The loss drops the Argos to 4-8 while the Wolves improve to 5-7.
"I thought we had a hangover from yesterday's tough loss", West Florida Head Coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "We did not shoot the ball well enough and we were not able to limit our turnovers."
Vining had his best performance of the season, tallying 17 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals on 6-13 shooting in 28 minutes off the bench.Â
Daniel Sofield, coming off a season-high 25 points, had another solid performance putting up 16 points, including 8-8 from the charity stripe, while
Tarik Mckelphin and
Conor Flanagan both finished with 10 points each. Flanagan added a game-high nine rebounds.
Early on, it was looking like it would be a repeat of Friday night's close game, with the teams standing at 18 points apiece at the 6:34 mark of the first half, following a lay-up by Vining. However, UWG would go on an 18-6 run to close the half, shooting 47 percent compared to the Argos' 30 percent for the first period.
West Georgia would continue their hot shooting, starting the second period on a 14-2 run to put comfortable distance between the two squads. UWF would later pull within 16 points on two different occasions on field goals by Sofield and Vining, but the Argos never were able to truly threaten UWG as the hosts led by as many as 26 points in the second half.
Overall, the Argos shot just 35 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range, compared to West Georgia finishing with a field goal percentage of 47.1, boosted by their 40 paint points and 18 points off 18 Argonaut turnovers. Michael Zabetakis once again led UWG with 19 points, on 7-17 shooting, and six rebounds, while Jalen Sasser finished with 17 points off the bench for the hosts.
The two squads tied in the rebounding category at 36, with Mckelphin and
Wendell Matthews each having five boards for the Argos. Matthews also contributed a team-high two blocks.
"Overall, I thought
Daniel Sofield and Tarik (Mckelphin) had a good weekend and (Akili) Vining really helped us today", Burkhamer continued. "We have to re-group and make sure we are ready for next weekend."
Next up, UWF will return home next weekend for two contests on Friday and Saturday against Montevallo. Tip-off versus the Falcons is set for 6:30 pm on Friday night, with Saturday's game scheduled for 3 p.m.
