PENSACOLA, Fla. – After picking up a big victory over the fourth-ranked University of Indianapolis on Thursday, the West Florida Men's Tennis team will be back in action on Saturday playing a doubleheader from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
It will be the University of Texas at Tyler and Spring Hill College coming to town to finish out the weekend as the Argonauts look to continue their success and finish 3-0 on the week.
Now sitting at 7-2 on the season, the fifth-ranked Argonauts are just finding their groove as they cruise past the halfway point in their season. The road ahead will not be much easier for West Florida as they are scheduled to face six conference opponents as well as one more non-conference opponent to round out their season.
About the Argonauts – With a 7-2 record on the season, the Argonauts have looked impressive in the early season including picking up victories against three ranked opponents so far on the year. This success has West Florida currently sitting at fifth in the latest Oracle ITA Rankings, but after a win against fourth-ranked UINDY on Thursday the Argos are likely to rise in the next rankings.
Bolstered by strong doubles play, the Argonauts are currently 20-5 in doubles on the season winning the lone point in eight of their nine matches.
Salvador Banderira and partner
Gabriel Nery have led the charge for West Florida in doubles going 8-1 on the season playing from all three positions.
William Shkrob and
Nicolas Lecoutre have gone 6-2 on the year to be another pairing the Argos can rely on in doubles.
Singles play has seen the Argonauts pull from every position of the lineup having new players step up each match to win crucial points.
Serdar Bojadjiev has been the consistent No. 1 for West Florida and is coming off of a huge win against the twelfth-ranked player in the nation in his last match.
Juan Cabrera has been another player the Argos can rely on as he is currently 8-0 on the season across numerous positions. Altogether, UWF is 28-17 in singles play on the season and will look to improve that even more as they head to the second half of their schedule.
About the Patriots – The University of Texas at Tyler comes into Saturday with a record of 2-6 to begin their campaign. However, the Patriots have lost to two Division I opponents as well as one ranked Division II opponent for a very difficult start to their year.
UT Tyler finished last season with a 1-8 record including a loss to the Argonauts when they squared off just before the cancelation came due to COVID-19. In that match, West Florida captured all three doubles victories to secure that lone point. The Patriots lone point came from Jorge Sala Frigeri who took down Banderia of UWF 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 from the No. 3 position.
This is a very experienced Patriot team this year as they bring back ten players from last year's team including Jan Lucca Marquardt who led the team with a 6-3 singles record last season. They will look to use this experience on Saturday when they try to upset the Argos from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
About the Badgers – Spring Hill is another team who have had a difficult start to their year going 2-6 in the few matches they have played so far this season.
Doubles has been an area of the Badgers play that is still trying to work itself out as there have currently been 11 different pairings played this season with Spring Hill coming out with a 7-16 record.
In singles, Spring Hill is currently 15-30 on the season with Louis Deck currently leading the way for the Badgers with three wins on the year. Cedric Nitz has been the Badgers No. 1 player most of the season and currently holds a 34-28 record on his career.
The Badgers will try to rely on his play as well as the other experienced players on the team to try to pull off an upset against the Argos.
Schedule for Saturday – Play will begin at 10 AM on Saturday from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex when UT Tyler takes on the Argos. Once that match is concluded there will be a short break before the Argonauts are right back at it around 2 PM when they face Spring Hill. As always keep up with West Florida Men's Tennis team on social media for all of the updates on the weekend as well as any news involving the Argos.
