MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the final match of the current road trip, the West Florida Women's Tennis team took down Christian Brothers 4-1 to return to Pensacola unbeaten on the weekend. This victory pushes the Argonauts record to 8-3 and keeps them on top of the Gulf South Conference joining West Alabama as the only two teams unbeaten in GSC play this season.
With the win today, the Argonauts now improve to 12-0 all-time against the Lady Bucs with the victories spanning back to the 2012 season.
Regardless of the history, this Christian Brothers team continues to improve each year and entered today's match with a 10-1 record this season. Good play from the top of their lineup today challenged the Argonauts, but ultimately West Florida was able to do enough to secure four points and the victory on the day.
In doubles, the Argonauts secured wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to win the lone point in the second consecutive match.
Samantha Echevarria and
Karolina Silwanowicz teamed up once again to pick up a 6-1 victory from the No. 2 position to improve to 5-2 as a pairing on the season.
Irene Recuenco and
Raissa Wagner secured the doubles point for West Florida winning 6-1 as well from the No. 3 position.
"We played very well in doubles today," Head Coach
Derrick Racine stated. "It was good to jump out to another early 1-0 lead in today's match."
Singles play was very competitive from both teams today including a matchup from the No. 1 position that featured two of the best players in the Gulf South Conference.
From the No. 1 position,
Berta Bonardi faced off with Raquel Amaro of Christian Brothers and played in a very tight match that ultimately went in the favor of Amaro. However, the Argonauts made sure to battle back and picked up wins from the No. 2, 3, and 4 positions to come out with the win.
Recuenco playing as the No. 2 won her match 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 8-3 on the season.
Sara Yigin got the nod from the No. 3 position today and remained unbeaten winning 6-1, 6-1 in her match. The final victory of the day came from Silwanowicz who won 6-0, 6-4 from the No. 4 position.
"Singles play was very tight and it was a great competitive match for us," Coach Racine noted. "Christian Brothers are vastly improved and the Gulf South Conference has turned into a super competitive tennis conference. There are no weak teams and you have to be on top of your game each and every match."
West Florida will now return to Pensacola for a very short break before hitting the road again on Friday to take on Valdosta State and North Georgia on the weekend.
