PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida softball team will make the trip to Spring Hill on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Badgers. After sweeping Mississippi College over the weekend, UWF is 12-5 on the year.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm at Murray Field, and fans can follow along with live stats at the link above or by visiting GoArgos.com/SoftballStats. Fans are not allowed at events on Spring Hill's campus this year, due to the college's protocols.
UWF swept Spring Hill in a doubleheader in Pensacola in late February, with scores of 7-6 and 15-0. The Argos are 18-4 against Spring Hill since 2014 and have won 15 consecutive head-to-head matchups.
HOWARD AND WILSON ARE ROLLING
It has been a good few weeks for
Teala Howard and
Kara Wilson, who are each riding a 12-game hitting streak. The streaks are the longest this season for UWF.
Howard has led the team in batting (.429), runs (16), hits, (18), on-base percentage (.478), and stolen bases (9) over the last 12 games, and she has had multiple hits in five of those contests. She had an 18-game hitting streak, dating back to February 2020, that wrapped up on February 13 of this year, and she has had a hit in every game since that original streak finished.
Wilson has been crushing softballs this season, especially in her last 12 games. The senior leads UWF in doubles (5), home runs (4), RBIs (13), total bases (30), and walks (6) in that time, and her five home runs this season lead the Gulf South Conference. She also ranks second in the league this year in total bases (38).
DOMINANT IN THE CIRCLE
West Florida's rotation dominated over the weekend against Mississippi College, posting a 1.00 ERA over 21 innings of work. The trio –
Grace Gilbert,
Kelsey Sweatt, and
Montana Young – struck out 17 batters while walking just 4, and they held the Lady Choctaws to a .155 batting average.
Gilbert threw a shutout on Friday to open the series, with six strikeouts and just three hits allowed and no walks. Sweatt and Young followed suit on Saturday, combining for 11 strikeouts and a .163 batting average against them to take two more wins from MC. Sweatt started the day by striking out six and allowing only three hits, and Young struck out five with no walks over her seven innings of work.
THE HOMESTAND IS OVER
UWF wrapped up an 11-game homestand over the weekend and went 9-2 in those 11 games. The Argonauts were impressive in all phases of the game in that time, hitting .322 and slugging .573, with more walks than strikeouts. The Argos also hit 16 home runs and stole 21 bases over those 11 games, while the pitching staff struck out 75 batters over 74.2 innings.
Freshman
Montana Young was excellent during the homestand, with a 4-1 record and a 2.00 ERA, striking out 32 and walking just 1 batter in 28.0 innings.
At the plate, Howard and Wilson stood out, among others. Howard hit .436, with 14 runs and 17 hits, and Wilson's 5 doubles, 3 home runs, 11 RBIs, and .788 slugging percentage were all team highs.
Ally Merrill and
Courtney McLellan also put together a strong three weeks of work – Merrill hit three homers and slugged .692, while McLellan hit .345 with three doubles, two home runs, and she drew five walks without striking out.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND
The Argonauts dominated Mississippi College over the weekend, taking their second sweep in conference play this season. The pitching staff spun a 1.00 ERA over the weekend, while UWF hit .299 and slugged .582. The Argonauts also showed great patience at the plate, with 21 walks to go along with their 11 extra-base hits.
With the sweep, UWF is tied for third in the GSC with a 7-2 conference record. West Florida leads the league in doubles and home runs, and ranks second in runs and hits, offensively. The pitching staff is fourth in the conference in ERA (2.79) and opponent batting average (.227), while leading the conference in strikeouts (105).
