West Florida Begins Conference Tournament with Match Against Montevallo

Will be the second matchup with the Falcons on the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Florida Men's Tennis team will begin postseason play on Thursday when they take on Montevallo from the Gulf South Conference Tournament. As the No. 2 seed in the upcoming tournament, the Argonauts are looking to advance to their tenth straight conference championship with a win on Thursday as well as Friday.

Currently ranked as the No. 8 team in the nation, West Florida enters the postseason with a 14-4 record on the year including an 8-1 mark against conference opponents. This record features wins over four ranked opponents which has kept the Argonauts within the top-ten of the rankings all season.

Thursday's match will be a rematch of the regular-season finale for West Florida as they took down the Falcons 6-1 just this past Sunday. The Argonauts will look to carry this momentum into Thursday's match as they try to make a run for their thirteenth GSC Championship in program history.

About the Argonauts - West Florida enters the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed after going 8-1 in conference play with their lone loss coming to the No. 1 seed Valdosta State. With wins in their last three matches, the Argonauts are looking to have a good showing this weekend to ensure their spot in the upcoming regional tournament here in Pensacola.

On the season West Florida has relied on their doubles play to win them some big matches and have secured the lone point in each of their last thirteen matches. Overall, the Argonauts are 17-1 in doubles and boast the No. 5 pair in the country as well as a pairing that has won their last twelve matches.

Salvador Bandeira and Gabriel Nery have led the Argonauts from the No. 1 position throughout most of the season. Together they have been able to go 11-5 on the season which was good enough for them to be ranked No. 5 in the nation in the latest ITA rankings. In addition to these two, Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob have been untouchable at the No. 3 position winning their last twelve matches en route to their impressive 15-2 record on the season.

Singles play has seen the Argonauts have their ups and downs on the year with a new player stepping up in almost every match. Overall, West Florida is 66-31 in singles on the year and boasts a strong 14-3 record from the No. 5 position and a 14-2 record from the No. 6 position.

Serdar Bojadjiev has served as the Argonauts No. 1 all season and has gone 8-7 including wins over the No. 3, 27, 42, and 49 ranked players in the latest rankings. Juan Cabrera has been unbeatable in singles in the regular season compiling a 15-0 record from numerous positions on the season. Nery, in addition to his phenomenal doubles play, has gone 10-2 in singles to give West Florida many times a much-needed push from the bottom of the lineup.

About the Falcons – As the No. 7 seed in the upcoming tournament, Montevallo has gone 4-11 on the season with a 3-6 record in conference play. This record is a bit deceiving though as when the Falcons squared off with the Argonauts in their final match of the regular season, four of the six singles matches went to three sets.

On the season, Montevallo has won the lone doubles point four times, and recently won from the No. 1 position against West Florida.

Philippe Zehender and Milan Ludlage were the lone pairing to pick up a win against the Argonauts last Sunday and have gone 5-8 on the season primarily from the No. 1 position. Brecht Van
Buggenhout and James Bloomer serve primarily as the No. 2 pairing and kept things close with Bojadjiev and Miralles Miro of West Florida before falling 6-3 in the match.

In singles, the Falcons are 35-53 on the season and recently took a point from the Argonauts from the No. 4 position.

Dylan Valentine is Montevallo's primary No. 1 player on the season and has gone 5-8 from the top spot for the Falcons. Daniel Del Val was the lone Falcon to win this past Sunday as he took down Bandeira of West Florida 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 from the No. 4 position. Montevallo will lean on these players as well as others throughout their lineup if they want to knock off the Argonauts and continue in the tournament.

Updated National Rankings – Today, a new edition of the Oracle ITA National Team Rankings was announced and had West Florida hold steady at No. 8 in the country. This comes after the Argonauts closed out their regular season with two victories all against conference opponents.

West Florida is now one of four GSC teams to be featured in this latest poll as Valdosta State (No. 3), Delta State (No. 10), and Auburn Montgomery (No. 16) each remained in the top-25 as well.

Schedule for Thursday – Currently, first serve is scheduled for 2:30 PM (CST) from Montgomery, Alabama.
