PENSACOLA, Fla. - The 10th ranked UWF Baseball Team returns home after a six-game road trip to face the University of Montevallo on Sunday and Monday at Jim Spooner Field on the campus of the University of West Florida.
Sunday's games will be a double-header with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. while Monday's single-game will start at 1 p.m.
West Florida (22-6, 21-6 in the Gulf South Conference) comes into the match-up having won seven-straight series in a row, with wins in 10 of their last 12 contests. In their last six games, the Argos have scored 64 runs with the Argonauts scoring 10 or more runs three different times in that span. The Argos scored 15 runs in back-to-back contests as they put 15 in the series finale at Valdosta State as well as the series opener against Union, marking the first time that the program has accomplished that feat since March of 2018. Overall, the Argonauts are first in the GSC in team batting average (.314), runs scored (212) and hits (311).
Cullan O'Shea had seven hits in the series against Union with Matt Estrada adding five of his own, including a team-high four in the series opener. Centerfielder
Dylan Menhennett added to his team-high 43 hits, by nearly hitting for the cycle in game one as he totaled a double, triple and home run.
Miller Hancock tallied four hits in the three-game set as well.
Sean Means and
Josh Pahlad stood out for the Argonauts as both relievers pitched three plus innings out of the bullpen in games one and two of the series. In game one, Pahlad threw his longest outing of the season, going five innings while allowing four runs on seven hits, with seven strikeouts. Means threw a dominant three innings of relief in game two with three innings of work, allowing only one hit while totaling six strikeouts.
Menhennett The Mississippi Man: Menhennett, a native of Biloxi, Mississippi, has been a spark plug on offense for the Argos in 2021.
Dylan leads the team in hits (43), runs scored (30), home runs (7) and total bases (75). The centerfielder is also among the top players in the GSC as he ranks in the top 10 of the conference in batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, triples, and home runs. Menhennett also ranks sixth in all of division II in hits and is in the top 30 in total hits. He has also had a hit in his last 17 games, which is tied for the seventh-longest streak in school history.
A Powerful First Baseman: O'Shea, a product of Montgomery, Alabama, has been a big bat in the line-up for UWF. The left-handed hitter is hitting .339 with two triples, four home runs, 27 RBI's, and 28 runs scored which are all good enough for second on the team. Cullan also has team-leading 10 doubles on the season, tying him for second in the GSC and placing him 32nd in the nation. O'Shea is also first on the squad in put-outs with 199.
Slugging It Out: Currently, the Argos have four different players who are slugging above .541 in
Jason Roberts, O'Shea, Menhennett and Imwalle. The four of them have accounted for 17 of UWF's 24 home runs, with each of them being the only players on the team who have hit more than one home run. Roberts, Menhennett and O'Shea have at hit at least six doubles on the year, while Imwalle has added four of his own. The foursome also has 87 of the team's 188 RBI's with all four adding at least 22 hits on the season.
Strikeout Artists: Through 28 games, five West Florida pitchers have at least 29 strikeouts, with
Evan Floyd pacing the squad as the right-hander has 58. Floyd has regularly rung up the batters via the strikeout as the Pensacola Catholic product is fourth in the GSC in strikeouts and third in strikeouts looking (21). Fellow starter,
Ryan Brewer, is tied with Pahlad and Means for second on the team with 30 strikeouts, while
Tyler Dowdy has fanned 29 batters. Pahlad and Means have at least two appearances each with six or more K's, with Brewer having three which includes an eight-strikeout performance in a season-opening win over West Alabama. Dowdy has three games with five or more strikeouts, with Floyd having seven such appearances. Floyd registered a team-high 11 strikeouts in a complete-game performance against Christian Brothers on March 20th.
Argos In the Rankings: The Argos cracked the top ten in the latest collegiate baseball poll for the first time in two seasons. UWF was also placed at third in the South Region Rankings, trailing only Lee University who took the top spot, and Tampa. Shorter and Barry University rounded out the top five. Colorado Mesa, Tampa, Angelo State, Central Missouri and Lee were the top five in the collegiate baseball poll, with Lee coming in third in the NCBWA rankings as the top team in the GSC.
Weekend Extras: UWF will also be running the Go Blue, Think Green canned food drive presented by Publix on Friday and Saturday. Fans are encouraged to donate canned goods at the gate, which will go to the Argo Food Pantry. Anyone who donates 10 or more cans will be entered in a raffle for a $50 Publix gift card.
University of West Florida athletics has increased attendance to 25 percent capacity for all softball home games at the UWF Softball Complex. Each game is first come, first serve to the general public. A set number of tickets will be held aside for Argonaut Athletic Club Booster members. AAC members can collect their tickets at the ticket window on gameday with their booster club card. Tickets are $7 for general admission, $5 for seniors, military members, and visiting students, and free for UWF students, UWF faculty and staff, and children under 6 years old.
Gates will open 60 minutes prior to first pitch. Tailgating in the parking lot is not allowed, and, as a reminder, pets are not allowed. Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required by spectators and staff at the UWF Softball Complex. All other COVID-19 visitor compliance guidelines must be followed.
Scouting Montevallo: UM (10-14, 7-14 in the GSC) is led by coach Chandler Rose who is in his 10th season with the program. The Falcons come into the series after dropping two of three at home to West Alabama. Montevallo ranks 12th in the conference in team batting average (.256), runs scored (122) and is third in hits (198). However, the pitching staff has been solid as they hold a 3.62 team ERA, second in the conference, as they have only allowed 121 runs in 203 innings. They have also held opponents to a .251 batting average.
Riley Cain and Ben Teel have been key cogs offensively with both players hitting over .321 with Cain leading the team in hits (31), runs scored (21) and home runs (2) while Teel is first on the squad in doubles with nine. Asa Awbrey is another player to watch as he has four triples in 2021, which is tied for the most in the GSC. On the mound, look out for reliever Chandler Ingram, who is fifth in the conference in ERA (2.36), fourth in opposing batting average (.200), and is sixth in saves (3).
Series History: Dating back to 2006, the Argonauts are 17-12 against the Falcons, which includes a 7-1 mark in Pensacola, Florida. UWF won the last series between the two teams in 2020 at Montevallo as they outscored UM 15-3 in a three-game series, highlighted by a 10-0 victory in game one of the series.
