PENSACOLA, Fla. – The newly No. 8 ranked West Florida Men's Tennis team will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Mississippi College here at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. This will be one of the Argonaut's final two matches of the regular season before they begin the Gulf South Conference Tournament from April 22-24 in Montgomery, Alabama.
Currently 12-4 on the season, the Argonauts have already locked up the No. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament and will look to add another win on Sunday. This meeting will be the ninth all-time between the Argonauts and the Choctaws with West Florida currently leading the series 8-0 overall.
About West Florida – The Argonauts come into Sunday with a 12-4 record including a 6-1 mark in conference play on the season. Out of these twelve wins, four have been over ranked opponents which has West Florida ranked No. 8 in the latest poll.
Doubles play has been exceptional all season for West Florida as they are 35-11 overall and feature the No. 11 ranked pairing in the nation.
Salvador Bandeira and
Gabriel Nery have been named as the No. 11 ranked double's pairing in the latest ITA rankings after achieving an 11-4 record to this point in the season. Playing from all three positions on the season, Bandeira and Nery have been a great piece to the Argonauts doubles success on the year. In addition to these two,
Nicolas Lecoutre and his partner
William Shkrob have
been another dominating force in doubles going 13-2 on the season including wins in their last ten matches.
In singles, the Argonauts have had some inconsistent play, but a few players do stand out amongst the rest to provide that deciding point in many of West Florida's matches.
Serdar Bojadjiev, ranked No. 39 in the latest ITA singles poll, sits a top of the Argonauts lineup and has already picked up wins over the No. 3, 27, 42, and 49 ranked players in the latest rankings. In addition to Bojadjiev,
Juan Cabrera has been exceptional in singles play going 13-0 from several positions on the season.
About Mississippi College – The Choctaws enter Sunday's matchup with a 1-8 record on the season including a 1-3 mark in conference play.
In doubles, Mississippi College 5-21 overall and are led by Joe Jarvis and Brady McDaniel who have three of the Choctaws five wins. Jarvis and McDaniel on the season are 3-3 as a pair and primary play from the No. 3 position in the Choctaws lineup.
Singles play sees the Choctaws at a 12-41 mark overall including a 5-4 record from Maksym Konovalov to lead the charge for Mississippi College. Konovalov, who is a graduate student for the Choctaws, has won his last two singles matches and is 4-1 from the No. 6 position on the season.
Sunday's Schedule – Action is scheduled to begin at 1 PM (CST) on Sunday with both the Men's and Women's teams taking on Mississippi College from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. Montevallo Makeup – Originally scheduled for Mar. 25, the home match against Montevallo has been scheduled to be made up on April 16 at 10 AM from the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. Barring any additional changes, this will be the final regular-season match for both teams before they begin postseason play the week after.
