West Florida Earns Conference Win Over Mississippi College

Daniel Sofield led the way for UWF with 18 points

PENSACOLA, Fla.- Led by Daniel Sofields 18 points, the University of West Florida Men's Basketball team defeated the Mississippi College Choctaws 72-62.
 
Mississippi College jumped out ahead in the opening minute of the game but ultimately trailed West Florida the remainder of the game. The Argos are now 13-3 overall and 7-2 in conference.
 
In the first half UWF was 13-26 from the field on 50 percent shooting. The Argos knocked down three three pointers during the first half going 3-7 from beyond the arc. David Petit-Homme led the way for West Florida at the half with eight points. 
 
Mississippi College was 10-26 from the field for a field goal percentage of 38.5. The Choctaws were 3-14 from the three point line going 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. Tradavius Thompson led MC in scoring at the half with 12 points.  Mississippi College outrebounded West Florida 15-14 during the first half. 
 
The Argos went to halftime with a 33-26 lead. 
 
The Argos continued to dominate in the second half, making it difficult for the Mississippi College offense to find their rhythm. MC was 12-34 from the field on 35 percent shooting. UWF was 10-24 from the field during the second half for a field goal percentage of 41.7.
 
Overall UWF had a 46 percent field goal percentage going 23-50 from the field. The Argos made 21 free throws as a team, a key factor in the team's win. Wendell Matthews finished the evening in double figures for UWF with 15 points and a team high eight rebounds.
 
"We win ugly, we don't play pretty at all but we've been finding ways to win and tonight it was at the free throw line, '' said Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer. "We were able to make enough plays to win the game and make enough stops to win the game. This team is resilient. They have found ways in different scenarios, whether it be offensively or defensively to get a stop or get a score to help us finish games out."
 
Overall West Florida outrebounded Mississippi College 38-33. The Argos had 19 points coming from the bench and scored 30 points in the paint.
 
The UWF Men's Basketball team will face Delta State on Saturday, Jan.15 at the UWF Field House. Tipoff is set for 4 P.M.
