No. 14 UWF Wins 20th Match With Road Win at Union

The Argos took over sole possession of first place in the GSC

JACKSON, Tenn. – Jenna Zydlo and Alex Oliver combined for 30 kills and four blocks as the No. 14 UWF women's volleyball team defeated Union, 3-1, at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Friday.

UWF (20-5, 10-1 Gulf South) is now alone in first place in the GSC standings with five regular-season matches remaining. The Argonauts also won their 20th match for the 17th-consecutive year and the 18th in the last 19, with the lone miss coming during the 2004 season when the season was canceled after 12 matches following Hurricane Ivan.

UWF was in control for the majority of the match, finishing with a .212 hitting pct. while holding Union to .146 hitting thanks in large part to 76 digs. Four players had double-digit digs, led by Meg Brackhan and Taylor Vaneekeren with 17 each.

Offensively, Zydlo hit .483 with 16 kills and Oliver had 14 winners on a .355 clip. Vaneekeren was right on her season average of just over 10 assists per set, totaling 41 to go with a service ace and a pair of block assists. UWF played 11 players in the match and seven of them were in on at least two of the team's 10 blocks.

The first set went back-and-forth for the opening 10 points before the Argos used an 11-3 run to claim a 25-16 win. The second set saw the run come at the start of the frame as UWF jumped out to a 9-1 lead before cruising to a 25-15 decision. In the third, Union capitalized on some UWF hitting woes and won 25-22. The Argos closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.

Union (15-9, 8-2) was held to a .146 attack pct. and had 14 service errors – their second-highest total this season.

UWF will make the short drive to Memphis for a match-up with Christian Brothers (3-17, 2-9) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
