Sofield Reaches 1,000-Point Club In Win Over Fort Valley State

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Daniel Sofield scored 21 points and became the fifth player in UWF men's basketball history to score 1,000 points as he helped UWF to a 63-57 win over Fort Valley State at the UWF Field House on Sunday.

UWF improved to 2-0 on the season by shooting 42 percent overall, including a very efficient 50 percent in the second half.

"I'm excited to get to 2-0 because I knew it would be a hard-fought game and we had to fight through some adversity, their size and physicality," UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer said.
"He's started every game since he was a freshman and to his credit, he has kept working and his skills have gotten better each year," Burkhamer said. "He has continued to add to his game. He is a lot harder to guard and defend, and has continued to make good decision after good decision, and will finish his career as one of the best to ever play here."

In addition to Sofield's effort, LaTrell Tate had nine of his 11 after half time and Jejuan Weatherspoon finished with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Argos led 26-18 at the half after they closed on a 12-0 run over the final 6:45. They continued the hot play in the opening four minutes of the second half, stretching the lead to 37-22. The Wildcats continued to battle and pulled to within five points twice. But UWF made five free throws in the final minute to hold off FVSU.

UWF will return to play on Thursday when the squad opens Gulf South Conference play against Shorter (0-2). Tip off at the UWF Field House is at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game at 5:30 p.m.
