CLEVELAND, Miss. – LaTrell Tate scored a career-high 22 points and UWF shot 50 percent in a very solid 75-64 win over Delta State at Sillers Coliseum Monday.
UWF (4-3, 1-3 Gulf South) picked up its first league win of the year and won in Cleveland for the first time since 2014, snapping a 5-game losing streak at Sillers.
"We did a good job of forcing tempo early and making good decisions, and it always helps to make shots," UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "We did a good job defensively and guarded them pretty well. We rebounded much better tonight and got some second shot opportunities."
The Argonauts opened the game making 10 of their first 14 shots, including a 12-0 run that propelled them to a 25-11 lead midway through the first half.
Tate was the catalyst in the opening 10 minutes, scoring nine of the team's first 21 points. While Tate was moving freely through the DSU defense, the Argos' inside strength came to the forefront with Wendell Matthews, Dave Petit-Homme, Channick Nkoma and Jejuan Weatherspoon out-muscling anyone who got in their way.
That group helped UWF to a 23-7 rebounding edge and used 10 offensive boards for 17 second chance points. A large majority of the 24 points in the paint were on those offensive rebounds. Eight different players hit the scoring column in the first 20 minutes as UWF made 56 percent of its shots on its way to a 46-35 lead. They ended the frame on an 8-0 run.
DSU got within nine three minutes into the second half, but UWF responded with Jared DeHart 3-pointer and a Tate bucket in the lane. The Statesmen couldn't get the margin under 10 points until a Lee Cotton three with 2:39 to play made it a 72-64 Argo lead. But Tate put the exclamation point on the game with a 3-point play on a 16-foot jumper with 1:36 remaining.
Daniel Sofield had 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. DeHart had a season-high for the second-consecutive game, finishing with 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds.
DSU (0-6, 0-4) had four players reach double figures, led by Maalik Cartwright with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
UWF will return to play on Sunday when it travels to Carrollton, Georgia to face West Georgia. That game will begin at 4 p.m. Eastern Time at the UWG Coliseum.
