Argos Fall To West Georgia On the Road, 69-62

LaTrell Tate led the team with a career-high 25 points

CARROLLTON, Ga. – LaTrell Tate scored a career-high for the second-consecutive game, but UWF fell to West Georgia, 69-62 at the UWG Coliseum on Sunday.

Tate finished with 25 points for his third-consecutive 20-point performance and had three assists.

UWF (4-4, 1-4 Gulf South) shot 36 percent in the contest and 40 percent in the second half. Tate had 19 after the break and Jejuan Weatherspoon scored 10 of his 15 during the final 10 minutes to help keep the Argos within striking distance, and added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the year - third of his career.

"This was another hard-fought GSC game," said UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer. "Two things really hurt us – We simply missed too many open shots, and we have to close out and finish defensive possessions better.

"LaTrell had a terrific game and really attacked the paint. We look forward to getting back to the Field House for three big GSC games."

UWF closed the first half on a 7-1 run to pull within 30-24. The Wolves went ahead by 14 four minutes into the second half, 42-28. The margin remained around 10 points through the midway points of the period. Then the Argos trimmed the deficit to 54-49 with 6:21 remaining.

The teams traded scores for the next six possessions before Tate made a pair of free throws and then a 3-pointer with 1:04 left that got UWF to 64-60. On the ensuing UWG possession, the Jalen Sasser got a tip-in to give the Wolves a 6-point lead. Daniel Sofield missed a 3-pointer the next time down the floor for the Argos and that ended the comeback.

Sofield had nine points in the game.

UWG (5-1, 5-0) won its fifth-consecutive game as Michael Zabetakis matched Tate with a career-high 25 points, while adding 10 rebounds and seven turnovers. Zawdie Jackson scored 19 of his 22 in the second half.

The Wolves out-rebounded the Argonauts 41-31 and each team had 10 offensive boards.

UWF returns home to the UWF Field House for a pair next weekend against Union and Christian Brothers. The Argos and Bulldogs will meet on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
