MONTEVALLO, Ala. – LaTrell Tate scored a career-high 37 points but UWF fell to Montevallo, 115-113, in a shootout at Trustmark Arena on Saturday.
Along with Tate's total – which is the fourth-most in a game in UWF history – all five starters scored in double figures.
Wendell Matthews had 28, Jared Dehart had a career-best 17,
Daniel Sofield had 13 and
Sano Rutatika had 10.
Tate also tied the single-game free throw percentage mark, becoming the fifth Argo to make all of his attempts with at least 10 tries in a contest, going 10-for-10. His 37 point total is the highest since Matthews had 35 at Montevallo in February of 2021.
After leading 63-50 at half time, UWF saw its margin trimmed to single digits just before the 10-minute mark before UM tied it at 95 with 6:41 left.
From there, the lead traded hands six times with the Falcons getting the game-winning 3-point play from James McNeil with 6.6 seconds left. Tate's 3-point shot at the buzzer was no good.
UWF (7-6, 3-6 Gulf South) shot 63 percent from the floor while connecting on 10 triples and 27-of-35 free throws. But the Argonauts had 20 turnovers that led to 31 points for the Falcons.
"We absolutely could not guard the ball," UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "We gave up too many layups and when they did miss, they were tougher and more aggressive to rebounds. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds and they were quicker and tougher.
"Offensively, we scored enough points to win but turned the ball over way too much with some bad turnovers that led to points for them."
For UM (6-8, 4-6), Braxton Bertolette had a career-high 33 points, making six 3-pointers and scoring 19 in the second half. The Falcons found success with 22 offensive rebounds that they converted into 28 second chance points.
UWF will return to action on Monday with a road game at Auburn Montgomery (6-8, 4-6) at the AUM Gymnasium. That game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
