UWF Opens GSC Play with West Georgia at Jim Spooner Field This Weekend

The Argonauts will play their next six games at home against UWG and Shorter

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF baseball team will open Gulf South Conference play with a 6-game homestand over the next two weekends, beginning Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against West Georgia at 1 p.m. The teams will play a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS
* UWF is 2-4 after dropping three 1-run games at Rollins last weekend. This the opening weekend of GSC play for both teams.
* UWF is hitting just .196 (171st in the NCAA) as a team and has seven extra base hits (6 2B, 1 HR). The pitching staff has compiled a 3.20 ERA (24th nationally) and held opponents to a .205 batting average. In the field, UWF has a .983 fielding pct. to rank eight in the country and has turned four double plays.
* On the base paths, the Argonauts are 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts with the one unsuccessful attempt coming on a first move pick off. In steal attempts that were pitched, UWF is 9-for-9, led by Chris Johnson's 4-for-4 and Trent Jeffcoat's 3-for-3 efforts.
* UWF went 37-11 in 2021 and finished second in the Gulf South Conference at 28-8. The Argos won the GSC Tournament title and hosted the NCAA South Regional as the No. 1 seed where they lost in the regional final.
* The Argos return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from a year ago. They have added 11 transfers, one redshirt freshman and nine true freshmen.
 
JEFFCOAT PERFORMING AS ADVERTISED
* UWF sophomore transfer Trent Jeffcoat has performed very well through six games, collecting a hit in all six games with a team-high .333 batting average, an RBI and four runs scored. The transfer from Tallahassee CC and Pensacola native has two errors in 37 chances for a .946 fielding pct.
 
42ND SEASON OF UWF BASEBALL
* UWF enters the weekend with an all-time mark of 1286-858-1 dating back to the first season in 1981. Jim Spooner went 688-521-1 in 23 seasons from 1983-2005, while Mike Jeffcoat has compiled a 542-290 in 16-plus seasons since taking over for Spoon.
* UWF has made eight NCAA Regional appearances with one National Championship in 2011. The team has won six GSC regular-season titles and two GSC Tournament crowns.
 
JEFFCOAT ENTERS 17TH SEASON AS UWF HEAD COACH
* UWF alum Mike Jeffcoat has compiled a 542-290 in 16-plus seasons at UWF since taking over for his mentor, Jim Spooner, in 2006. He was an assistant for Spooner from 2001-05 when he served as the pitching coach.
* UWF has made all eight of the program's NCAA postseason appearances under Jeffcoat, including the program's first national championship in 2011. 
* He was the head coach at Alabama Southern CC from 1995-99 where he went 107-138.
* Jeffcoat received his bachelor's degree in Sports Science from UWF in 1991 and his master's in Sports Science in 1994.
 
SERIES BUSINESS
* The Argonauts have won 28 of their last 34 3-game series over the past 3-plus seasons.
* Of the six series they have lost, two are to Florida Southern (2019 & 2020), two at Rollins (2019 & 2022), one to Shorter (2021) and one to Lee (2019).
* In GSC 3-game series, UWF is 25-2 over that time, leading the conference in series wins.
 
DOUBLE YOUR TROUBLE
* With the start of GSC play this weekend, that means doubleheaders will dominate the season. The Argos will play 30 dates through the rest of the regular season, with 10 of those being a doubleheader.
* Over the last four seasons (2019-present), UWF has played 28 DHs, sweeping 15, splitting 12 and being swept just once. UWF has not lost a DH in 27 of the last 28 DHs.
* In the last seven seasons, UWF has not been swept in a DH even once in four of those and has never been swept more than they have swept an opponent.
 
UWF'S WEEKEND ROTATION
* UWF is scheduled to use the same starting rotation as the first two weeks of the year.
* UWF will send righthander Josh Pahlad to the mound on Saturday in game one. The fifth-year senior from Kissimmee, Fla. is 0-2 with a 2.92 ERA over 12.1 innings. He has allowed allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Pahlad has been primarily a reliever in his four seasons at UWF, posting a 10-3 record with seven saves and a 3.38 ERA over 108.1 innings and 54 appearances. Last year he went 3-0 with three saves and a 3.76 ERA in 16 appearances over a career-high 40.2 IP. He is 0-1 against Rollins after allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in 1.0 IP in a 9-8 loss in 2019.
* Long Island transfer Salvatore Ferro has a 1.80 ERA with a pair of no decisions while starting the second game of each series. Last week at Rollins, he went 6.0 innings and allowed zero runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. A week earlier versus Florida Southern, he received a no decision in the 5-3 win, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four in 4.0 IP. The lefthander is a junior from Middle Village, N.Y. He went 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 17 innings over 16 games in 2021 for the Sharks. He struck out a career-high five in a career-high four innings against Merrimack on May 22.
* Tyler Dowdy had a strong freshman season in 2021, compiling a 7-1 record, 3.38 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 18 walks in 85.1 innings. Twice he struck out eight batters – once against Lee in the final weekend of the regular season and against Delta State (2 hits over 8.1 IP) in the second game of the GSC Championship series. The righthander from Plant City, Fla. also hit .273 at the plate with nine hits, a home run and five RBI. He also walked five times and struck out nine. In 2022 he is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA. In the Sunday game at Rollins, he worked 7.1 innings for the second-consecutive outing, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout and two walks. In the opening weekend against FSC, he fanned three while scattering three hits and allowing one run on a solo HR over 7.1 IP on 87 pitches.
 
O'SHEA PRIMED FOR STRONG SENIOR SEASON
* Senior Cullan O'Shea was a second-team All-GSC choice a year ago after he hit .339 and led the team with 11 home runs – five in the postseason, 55 runs, 17 doubles and a .620 slugging percentage. He is currently tied for eighth in UWF history with 14 homers and third with a .575 slugging pct.
* The 6-foot-2 first baseman from Mobile, Ala. was placed onto the preseason All-GSC and All-South Region squads last month.
 
ABOUT WEST GEORGIA
* The Wolves opened with five-consecutive wins but have lost their last two games, UWG comes in hot offensively as the lead the conference in team batting average (.370), runs scored (83), slugging percentage (.605) and on-base percentage (.471).  Additionally, West Georgia is 10th in the nation in runs scored, sixth in batting average, 21st in home runs (10) and seventh in slugging percentage.
* Four Wolves' are hitting over .400, including Collin Moore who paces the team with a .565 batting average. Moore also leads the team with a 1.556 OPS (on-base plus slugging), doubles (5) and is second on the squad in hits (13), home runs (1) and runs batted in (9). 2021 All-GSC Second Team member Brody Wortham is second on the team in batting average (.484) while he is first in hits (15) and total bases (24). Designated hitter Fuzzy Furr and centerfielder Anthony Calabro round out the offense with a combined 18 runs scored, 20 hits, four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 20 RBIs between them.
* On the mound, UWG is seventh in the league in earned run average (5.09), sixth in hits allowed (54), fifth in runs allowed (34), fourth in walks allowed (29) and ninth in strikeouts (53). Robert Coleman paces the pitching staff with a 1.50 ERA in two starts while Andrew Smith stars out of the bullpen with a dazzling 1.17 ERA and nine strikeouts in four appearances.
 
UWF-WEST GEORGIA SERIES HISTORY
* Dating back to 2006, the Argonauts are 36-14 against West Georgia, which includes a 15-6 mark at Jim Spooner Field.  Last season, UWF went 3-1 against the Wolves, capped off by a 6-0 victory in the opening round of the GSC Tournament where Tyler Dowdy hit his first-career home run.  Fellow Argonaut, Cullan O'Shea, hit two round-trippers in the series-clinching at West Georgia earlier that season.
 
UWF TABBED FIRST IN GSC PRESEASON POLL
* UWF was picked to finish first in the 2022 Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. This is the second-consecutive year the Argonauts were picked first and the sixth time in the last 11 seasons.
* In a balanced top-half of the poll, UWF received five of 12 possible first place votes and a total of 136 polling points.
* Delta State and Lee each had three first place votes and were second and third, respectively. Alabama Huntsville in fourth and Valdosta State in fifth had the remaining two first place votes and were in a near dead heat with just one point apart.
* Shorter was voted sixth with West Georgia in seventh. The bottom half of the standings included Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery, Montevallo, West Alabama, Union and Christian Brothers.
