LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 21st-ranked UWF baseball team used patience at the plate and opportunistic base running on its way to a 16-9 win over West Alabama at Tartt Field on Saturday.
UWF (12-6, 9-1 Gulf South) drew a season-high 14 walks and scored in seven of the nine innings in a game played with the temperature in the low 40s and a strong wind off Lake Livingston.
The 16 runs were also the most against the Tigers in series history.
"We took advantage offensively with all of the walks and wild pitches and had a few key hits here and there," UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "I am looking for us to play a cleaner game tomorrow."
After falling behind 2-1 in the first, UWF scored six runs in the third and two in the fourth to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Argos added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh, before four in the eighth put the game out of reach. The Tigers did score three in the final two frames but never threatened when the game was in doubt.
Josh Prizina led the Argonauts with three hits while scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. He had a single, double and belted a solo home run in the seventh – his first of the season.
Jadon Fryman had four RBI on a pair of hits, including a double in the eighth. He also reached on an error, negating another RBI opportunity in the seventh.
Trent Jeffcoat scored three times and reached base four times on a hit and three walks.
Josh Pahlad improved to 2-2 on the mound after working 6-plus innings as he allowed six runs on nine hits.
UWA (5-16, 3-4) had 16 hits.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at Noon.
