DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The UWF baseball team fell to North Georgia, 7-6, in 11 innings at Bob Steiner Stadium on Tuesday.
UWF scored the go-ahead run in the tenth inning but allowed UNG to tie it in the bottom of the tenth and win in the 11th.
UWF (19-15) had 12 hits and got offensive contributions from eight starters, including
Preston Moore who had three hits and the RBI single in the tenth.
Trent Jeffcoat and
Cullan O'Shea each had two hits and both scored on O'Shea's team-leading seventh home run in the fourth inning. That long ball was the senior first baseman's 21st career homer at UWF, moving him into a tie for fifth all-time.
After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, the Argonauts took the lead with five runs in the fourth. Following O'Shea's blast to right, UWF scored three runs with two outs for a 5-3 lead.
UNG tied it at 5-5 in the fifth on a 2-run home run by Josh Sosa.
Neither team scored until the tenth inning.
For UWF,
Chase Stanhope came into the game following Sosa's at-bat and threw 3.1 innings of 1-hit ball with a strikeout and two walks. He only allowed one runner to advance past first and that came on a sacrifice bunt.
In the tenth,
Brady Browning led off with an infield single and moved to third on a
Jadon Fryman sacrifice and a
Mark Townsend groundout. Moore then singled to left to put the Argos back on top.
The Nighthawks tied it in the tenth when Jake Arnold reached on an error to start the inning. Two batters later he scored from third on a double play to extend the game.
In the 11th,
Dean Hotz pinch hit and drew a 1-out walk. After a strikeout, O'Shea hit a double to left and Hotz was thrown out at home to end the threat.
UNG loaded the bases in the final frame and then Tim Conway singled through the drawn-in infield to give the home team its sixth-consecutive extra-inning win.
Jared Hatch (0-1) took the loss after allowing the leadoff hit and walk in the 11th. Caleb Mitchell (3-0) was the winning pitcher for UNG.
The teams will play the final game of their midweek set on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
