PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF baseball team had six pitchers combine for 10 strikeouts in a 4-2 win over Spring Hill at Jim Spooner Field on Wednesday.
UWF (22-19) managed just four singles but were hit by a pitch three times, drew four walks and reached via fielding errors three more plate appearances.
All six pitchers saw 1-2 innings of work each, with
Sam Brown (1-0) earning the win with two innings of no-hit ball and three strikeouts.
Tyler Dowdy struck out two in one frame to start the night and
Jacob Estes secured his fourth save with a pair of scoreless innings.
"We used six pitchers and all of them threw well," UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We didn't have a lot of hits but we manufactured some runs and move runners over and took advantage of some wild pitches."
Offensively, UWF did enough to get runners on and move them around, while taking advantage of five wild pitches.
Josh Prizina got things started with runners on the corners in the second, when he laid down a bunt that allowed
Jadon Fryman to score. Three batters later,
Dean Hotz waited just long enough on an off-speed pitch to pull it through the hole on the left side of the infield as
Alden Davis scored from second for a 2-0 lead.
The Badgers cut into the lead with a Grayson Williams RBI double in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, the Argos collected their third unearned run when Prizina reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
An inning later, the Argos scored another run without the benefit of a base hit.
Brady Browning walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a
Preston Moore sacrifice and then scored on a Fryman sacrifice fly.
In the eighth, Spring Hill loaded the bases with no outs. Estes entered the game and gave up a sac fly before getting Cam Brock to ground into a double play.
SHC (31-13) had eight hits and matched the Argos with 10 runners left on base. Alex Holz (3-1) took his first loss of the season.
UWF will return to action this weekend in Cleveland, Tennessee, when it closes the regular-season at Lee (24-21). Friday's single game will start at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
The Argonauts have clinched a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament and can finish anywhere from third to fifth.
