UWF Hosts Alabama Huntsville This Weekend

The Argonauts are looking to snap a 3-game losing skid.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF baseball team returns home for a 3-game series against Alabama Huntsville this weekend. Play begins at Jim Spooner Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a doubleheader and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for a single game.
 
DAY OF PLAY ON SATURDAY
* Free admission is available on Saturday for the annual Day of Play. Features include a bounce house, free Kona Ice, assorted games/activities and a tye-dye t-shirt station while supplies last. Gates open at Noon.
 
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS
* UWF returns home to The Spoon with a 17-13 overall record. The Argonauts are in third place in the GSC with a 12-6 mark.
* The Argos are hitting .261 with 18 home runs, both of which rank 11th in the GSC. UWF is fifth nationally with 29 sacrifice bunts, while also collecting 14 base hits on bunts.
* On defense, UWF has a .978 fielding pct. to rank fifth in the country (1st in the GSC) and has turned 20 double plays.
* UWF's pitching staff has a 4.68 earned run avg. which is third in the league. They are also third in Walks Allowed per 9 Innings at 3.41.

* Trent Jeffcoat leads the team with a .350 batting avg., 30 runs, 41 base hits and 18 stolen bases. He reached base at least once in the team's first 29 games.
* Cullan O'Shea is second with a .309 batting avg., and ranks first in doubles (12), home runs (5), RBI (25) and walks (25). He also ranks tied for sixth all-time in UWF history with 19 home runs and is second with a .578 slugging pct.

SCOUTING UAH
* UAH comes to town with the third best batting avg. in the GSC at .298. The Argos are in the midst of a four week stretch where they face the top four hitting teams in the league.
* Garrett Bodine is hitting .350 with 10 doubles, six HR & 23 RBI to lead a group of six Chargers who hit more than .300. He also paces the GSC with 39 runs scored. Landon Ezzell is third in the conference with nine HR.
* UAH is 10th in the GSC with a 6.64 ERA and allows 10.5 hits per game & 40 total home runs - both the highest in the league.
* The Chargers are ninth in the GSC with a .953 fielding pct.
 
UWF-UAH SERIES HISTORY
* UAH leads the all-time series, 45-41, dating back to 1996 when UWF joined the GSC. The teams are meeting in Pensacola for the second-consecutive year after last year's series was moved from Huntsville due to forecasted rain.
* This will be the fifth time in the last seven seasons the squads have played at Jim Spooner Field. In another scheduling quirk, they played the regular-season series in Huntsville every year from 2011-14
 
UWF TABBED FIRST IN GSC PRESEASON POLL
* UWF was picked to finish first in the 2022 Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. This is the second-consecutive year the Argonauts were picked first and the sixth time in the last 11 seasons.
* In a balanced top-half of the poll, UWF received five of 12 possible first place votes and a total of 136 polling points.
* Delta State and Lee each had three first place votes and were second and third, respectively. Alabama Huntsville in fourth and Valdosta State in fifth had the remaining two first place votes and were in a near dead heat with just one point apart.
* Shorter was voted sixth with West Georgia in seventh. The bottom half of the standings included Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery, Montevallo, West Alabama, Union and Christian Brothers.
