Â
Weekend Recap
The Argos began regular season conference with a 1-1 record after defeating Alabama Huntsville (Sep. 9) 2-0 to extend the winning streak to 23 games against the Chargers and falling short to West Alabama (Sep. 11) 1-0 by a penalty kick.
Â
Set pieces were the game winner against Alabama Huntsville as both goals in the 2-0 win were finished off by corner kicks. Coming from
Ahnalie Layman in the 31
st minute, a driven ball was placed directly in the middle of the box to
Kaytlyn Larsen who attempted a shot, only to be awarded an assist as it was passed off to
Manami Okada who hit a tricky one-touch tap in in the opposite direction of Larsen's shot. Layman's corner kick earned the second assist to Okada's first goal of the season.
Â
The team did not let off the pressure as three minutes later a corner kick from Layman drifted to the back post for
Kileigh Whited to beautifully cross in for Larsen to get a head on to fall in the net.
Â
Heading into the following match, the Argos continued to dig deep and keep the opponents constantly battling but nothing was able to fall through in favor of the Argos. Multiple opportunities occurred as the team was awarded a foul just 15 yards out next to the left sideline for
Blair Cowan to take that landed just in front of the goal but the ball was headed slightly wide. The closest opportunity came in the 81
st minute as
Mya Swinton took a driven shot 20 yards out that bounced off the goalkeeper for
Kileigh Whited to tap in but was just saved by the fingertips of the keeper.
Â
The Argos instead would be haunted by a penalty kick that occurred in the 11
th minute that the Tigers were able to finish to be the only goal of the match.
