PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida volleyball (14-4, 8-0 GSC) hits the road for the first time in over two weeks as it travels to Rome, Ga., for a Friday night contest at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT against Shorter (4-11, 1-7 GSC) before a Saturday afternoon date in Cleveland, Tenn., with Lee (12-8, 4-4 GSC) at 1 pm ET/noon CT.
The Argos finished off last week undefeated in three matches, solidifying their status as the top team in the conference standings and growing their winning streak to 11 games and their active conference win streak to 13. The wins, combined with two losses last week by then-No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona, have moved UWF to No. 14 nationally, according to the national coaches poll. UWF aims to add two more conference wins to its resume before it steps out of GSC play for the SSC vs. GSC South Region Volleyball Crossover from Oct. 20-21.
Redshirt junior libero
Meg Brackhan is coming off a second straight week in which she took home GSC Defensive Player of the Week honors, totaling 48 digs across the wins over West Alabama, Alabama Huntsville and Montevallo. Her 286 total scoops and average of 4.21 per set are good for third place in the conference. The team's fellow native of Spanish Fort, Ala., right side
Avery Rodgers, sits at second place in the league with 199 kills with a .342 offensive output and at sixth in kills per set with 2.97. Junior middle hitter
Jenna Zydlo is fourth in hitting percentage with .316 and 131 kills, and graduate middle
Bailee Sterling comes in at seventh with .286 and 123 kills.
Junior outside hitter
Annie Monaco is at sixth in the GSC in aces with 23 and 0.43 per set coming off her most impressive week as an Argonaut. The Robert Morris transfer tallied 24 kills with a season high of 14 vs. UAH, 21 digs, five blocks, three aces and 30.5 total points. Freshman setter
Gabi Moulton continued to impress, racking up 48 assists to stay at sixth in the GSC with 373 assists and 5.65 per frame, while her sophomore counterpart,
Izabelle Sanchez, finished the week with 49 assists as she now has 276 total and 4.45 per set.
Shorter boasts two of the conference's top 10 ace leaders in Mia Alexander, who is at fifth with 23 total and 0.45 per set, and Claudia Loyola, who is ninth with 16 and 0.41. Loyola is also ninth in digs with 137 and 3.51 per frame. The Hawks are coached by Naomi Sullivan, now in her fourth season as head coach, and enter off a loss to Mississippi College that followed their first GSC win of the season, a 3-1 victory over West Alabama.
Lee's offensive attack is headed by Abby Stroh, who sits at third in the GSC in kills with 202 and 3.16 per set, and Macy Petty, who is ninth in hitting percentage with .278 with her 104 kills. The two also sit at fourth and seventh in aces, respectively, sandwiching Alexander and Monaco. The Flames also bring in the conference's second-place setter in Ashton Middleton, who has 595 assists and 7.73 per set to her name and sits behind Savannah Rutledge of UAH. Lee is coming off its own win over UWA and is led by first-year head coach Christa Fabre.
In addition to its season and conference winning streaks, the Argonauts own 16-2 and 13-2 all-time records against the Hawks and Flames, respectively. The last time UWF lost to these squads was in 2016, when it made this same two-step road trip as the top team in the conference and was upset in five-setters for two of its three regular-season conference losses that season. The Argos' other loss to Shorter came in 2014, and the other loss to Lee was in its second game as a member of the GSC in 2013.
