ORLANDO, Fla. - UWF (17-6, 10-0 GSC) began Day 2 of the South Region Crossover with a sweep of Florida Southern (12-7, 6-5 SSC) in response to its own 3-0 loss on Friday but could not keep up with the firepower of No. 3 Tampa (20-0, 11-0 SSC) in a 3-1 loss in the nightcap at Game Point Events Center.
WEST FLORIDA 3, FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23)
The Argos finished with the advantage in every category except errors, including nine aces to none for FSC, to come out on top in all three frames despite committing seven more errors.
The Moccasins neutralized a 13-10 UWF lead with four points to take a brief lead in the opening frame before the Blue and Green responded with a 4-0 run of their own.
Jenna Zydlo and
Jacque Martin killed balls to open it up before
Izabelle Sanchez fired back-to-back aces. With the lead later at 19-17, three consecutive errors ballooned the Argonaut lead. Two Moc points put the onus back on UWF, and
Annie Monaco and
Avery Rodgers both had kills to answer and bring it to set point before Rodgers stepped up again with a kill to tuck away the set.
A service error in the second gave West Florida the chance to build on its 2-1 lead, which it did thanks to a kill and two aces by Monaco and another kill by Rodgers. After closing that run, Rodgers opened another of the 5-0 variety. A
Bailee Sterling ace and a Martin kill combined with a pair of miscues. The teams traded points until Martin got her team to 23 points with a kill and ace and the resulting seven-point margin was enough to hold onto.
It didn't stop there, as Sterling, Rodgers and Monaco started the final frame with kills off assists from
Gabi Moulton to help the team build a 6-1 lead. From there, UWF was able to hold FSC at arm's length.
Zydlo and Monaco each led the team with nine kills. Martin had seven kills and 11 digs. Sterling and
Damyah Joyner both killed six balls.
Meg Brackhan scooped 15 attacks, and Moulton added nine as she also assisted 22 attacks.
TAMPA 3, WEST FLORIDA 1 (26-28, 25-15, 25-11, 25-10)
It seemed the good vibes from the sweep would carry over to the Argos' matchup against undefeated No. 3 Tampa as the visitors on the scoreboard took a back-and-forth first set marathon 28-26 to put the Spartans on the ropes temporarily. However, an upset wasn't in the cards as Tampa responded by outscoring UWF 75-36 the rest of the way.
Five Spartan hitters reached a .300 hitting percentage to just one for West Florida. That hitter was Sterling, as she tallied 12 kills to just one error to hit .500. Martin and Joyner combined for 19 additional kills, while Zydlo was next in line with five. Brackhan and Moulton combined to dig 19 attempts, while Moulton finished off a huge weekend as she achieved her second-highest setting mark as an Argo with 36 assists.
West Florida has a quick turnaround after it returns to Pensacola, as it will then travel back into the Eastern time zone for a GSC matchup at West Georgia on October 25, looking to continue its unbeaten streak in conference play.
