Argos Earn First Month Nominations of 2023-23 Season

CLEVELAND, Miss - For the first month of the 2023-24 season, two Argos have been named New South Intercollegiate Swimming Conference (NSISC) athletes of the month. Jade Fontenelle, the sophomore diver, was named Co-Diver of the month alongside Reagan Fulton of Delta State University. Freshman Sydney Lewis is making her debut college swimming career an impressive one by being named the NSISC swimmer of the month.

Picking up her first NSISC Athlete of the Month, Fontenelle has shown great strengths in her first month of the season. The Washington state native scored an NCAA Qualifying score during her meet in Moultrie, Georgia where she placed second overall scoring a 416.40. On the three meter during the same event, Fontenelle scored a 236.10, placing fourth overall. Later in the month of October, the Argos traveled to Tallahassee to face top Division 1 teams such as Florida State. During their meet, Fontenelle earned second place on the one meter boards scoring a 279.20, and third on the three meter with a score of 278.70. The sophomore is showing great confidence as she competes against strong competition early in the year. Just this past weekend, the diving team competed against another Division 1 school, Tulane, where Fontenelle continued her nationals-level competing, scoring a 267.75 for second place on the 3-meter and 242.78 on the high board.

Making her college swimming debut, freshman Sydney Lewis has put up some big scores for thr Argos. During her time competing in Tallahassee, the freshman came up big in the 100 yard butterfly, placing second with a time 57.11 next to a first place finish from an FSU swimmer. Also during her time in Tallahassee, Lewis placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.08. Just last weekend against Tulane, the freshman won two individual events, surpassing the competition in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events, before providing UWF with the advantage in the opening leg of the victorious 200 free relay.

The Argos are continuing to show just how strong they are coming into this season. The team will continue to push for excellence as they head into the month of November.
