UWF Travels To Yellowhammer State For Match-Up With Badgers

Argonauts are 12-0 all-time vs. Spring Hill

The UWF Men's Basketball Team will head to Mobile, looking to push their win streak to three games, for a match-up with Spring Hill on Saturday.  Tip-off is at 4:00 pm at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
 
West Florida is coming off a 91-49 victory over Pensacola Christian on Tuesday night in their home opener.  Guard, Tautvydas Kupstas, and forward, Xavier Washington, each scored 19 points as Kupstas did his damage from three-point range with five makes, while Washington dominated inside the paint with six field goals and seven made free-throws.
 
UWF also capitalized off 25 Eagles' mistakes, turning those into 29 points off turnovers.  West Florida also dominated on the glass with 11 more boards, leading to a 15-0 advantage on second chance points.  Washington also had a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Argos Heating Up From Outside: UWF has made 23 three-point field goals to start the season, with 11 of those coming in the win on Tuesday.  The 23 made field goals is the fourth-most in the Gulf South Conference, while the Argonaut's have accomplished that mark on the second fewest attempts of the teams in the top four of that group.
 
Kupstas, a native of Lithuania, accounts for 11 of those as the transfer from Skidmore College connected on five made three-pointers each in wins against Fort Valley State and PCC. He currently leads the GSC in total three-point field goals made. Eli Brown and Keith Hoffman have made three apiece, while the latter is shooting nearly 43 percent from range.
 
Washington Attacking The Charity Stripe: Washington, a native of Palmetto, Florida, has been getting to the free-throw line at will early on the season as the big man has already attempted 25 free-throws in three games, knocking down 17 of those.  His 17 made free-throws are tied with Maalik Cartwright of Delta State for the league lead, while his 25 attempts are the most in the conference.
 
Xavier has made at least five free-throws in each contest, registering a season-high seven in the victory over the Eagles.  Around the country, Washington is 14th overall in Division Two in attempts.
 
Stingy On Defense: After Tuesday's performance, West Florida currently sits in first in the league and 14th in Division II in turnover margin, 29th overall in turnovers forced per game (18), second in the GSC and 20th in the country in opponent field goal percentage (36 percent).
 
Four Argonauts' have at least three steals with Washington and Myles Ruth accounting leading the way with seven and six, respectively.  Xavier and sophomore, Sano Rutatika, each have two blocks.
 
About Spring Hill: The Badgers, led by Head Coach Craig Kennedy, come into the match-up at 1-2 on the season, defeating Rollins College and dropping contests to both Florida Tech and Embry-Riddle.
 
Walter Peggs has been a stalwart offensively for SHC as the transfer from Tennessee Tech has registered at least 11 points in all three games, including a season-high 23 in the season opener against Florida Tech.
 
Five Badgers scored in double-figures in the loss to Embry-Riddle, including Timothy Reilly who had a team-high 17 points and four blocks.  Steven Lyles had a game-high 20 points in their lone win.

Series History: All-time, UWF is 12-0 against the Badgers, with their most recent wins coming during the 2021-22 season, where the Argonauts won in both Mobile and Pensacola.  Rodney Bryant combined for eight points in the two match-ups with UWF pulling away in both by finals of 97-68 and 89-76.
