Â
SLOW STARTS PLAGUING THE ARGOS
* Look for UWF to do some things differently at the start of Friday's game in an attempt to get some early momentum and production.Â
* At Spring Hill, they had just 12 points in the first 8:15 of the game.
* At Shorter, UWF had just five points in the opening 5:45 with a 2:20 scoreless drought.
* At Lee, the Flames got hot and secured a 15-4 lead 4:45 into the game. The Argos played from behind until tying the game at 61 in the final two minutes.
* The two best offensive games for UWF – Eckerd and Spring Hill at home – the at Argos made their first four shots against Eckerd on their way to an 11-3 lead, and against SHC, scored on seven of their first nine possessions en route to an 18-3 lead.
Â
KANE, BOSTICK, TRUSHEL MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT AS 4-YEAR TRANSFERS
* UWF brought in eight transfers during the summer, but
Brooke Kane,
Tyashia Bostick and
Delaney Trushel have made the largest impact through four games.
* Kane spent four seasons at New Hampshire where she totaled 643 points and 392 rebounds in 95 games. Through six games this year she leads the team with 15.3 points per game on 48 pct. shooting, including 10-of-20 from outside for 50 pct. She also has five steals and four blocked shots. She ranks second in the GSC in FG pct. and would be first in 3-point FG pct. but she doesn't have the minimum 2.0 makes per game
* Bostick made the shortest move of the newcomers after a standout 4-year career at Spring Hill, where she collected 1000 points, 353 rebounds, 117 3-pointers in 80 games. She also was an 81 pct. FT shooter for her career. This season she is second on the team with 10.8 points and is second on the team with 10 3-pointers – but just 1-for-7 in the last two games.
* Trushel was a 3-year starter at USC Aiken where she 8.3 ppg in 62 contests to go along with 40 pct. 3-ppoint shooting each season with 82 total makes. This year she is third on the team with 9.7 ppg and 12-of-25 triples for 48 pct. – a figure that ranks second in the GSC and 41st in the country.
Â
IT'S A BLOCK PARTY AND EVERYONE'S INVITED
* UWF has swatted 25 opponent field goals through six games for 4.2 blocks per game. That is second in the GSC and ranks 42nd in Division II.
* The starting frontcourt of
Brooke Kane and
Tori Hunter, along with reserve forward
Claire Sutherland-Case have four blocks each to lead the team.
* 10 different Argos have at least one block this season.
Â
YELTON COLLECTED HEAD COACHING VICTORY NUMBER 250 AT SHORTER
* Saturday's win at Shorter was number 250 for
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton as a head coach. She is currently 250-207 in her 17th season, which includes 194-123 in her 12th at UWF. She spent five seasons as the head coach at Charleston Southern, going 56-84 from 2001-06.
* Last season she became the winningest coach in program history, passing Shannon Bergen's 183 wins with a triumph at Christian Brothers on Feb. 4, 2023.
* Additionally, she is on the verge of becoming the tenth coach in GSC history to reach 200 victories at a league school.
Â
SHATTERING RECORDS THE LAST TIME AT HOME
* UWF scored 111 points in the win over SHC last Tuesday, marking the second-highest scoring game in program history. The Argos scored at least 25 points in all four quarters, with a season-high 33 in the fourth. Here are the top scoring games in UWF history:
125Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Stillman 1/27/94
111Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Spring Hill, 11/21/24
111Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Concordia-Selma 2/26/94
109Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Albany State 11/12/16
108Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Columbus State 12/15/97
106Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Central Arkansas 1991
106Â Â Â Â Â Â Â vs. Stillman 12/2/94
Â
* UWF was absolutely locked in from outside, making 20-of-28 3-pointers in the win over Spring Hill on Tuesday. The 20 triples shattered the previous school record of 16 set two years ago against the Badgers. The figure is the most in the country thus far and tied for the fifth-most in GSC history.
* The 3-point field goal percentage of 71.4 is where it gets interesting. That figure isn't close to the top eight in the GSC record book because the minimum for makes is 5, meaning 5-of-5, 9-of-10, 7-of-8 and 6-of-7 dominate the list. Looking at the six games where a team made at least 20, here's what they all shot in their games:
.714 (20-of-28)Â Â Â UWFÂ Â Â Â Â vs. SHC, 2023-24
.618 (21-of-24)   Ark.-Monticello  vs. Rhema College, 2007-08
.591 (26-of-44)   Union   vs. Stillman, 2015-16
.522 (24-of-46)   Union   vs. Rust, 2015-16
.457 (21-of-46)   Union   vs. Shorter, 2022-23
n/a (20 made)    North Alabama  vs. Lindsey Wilson, 1998-99
Â
* UWF handed out a school-record 33 assists as well, which is the 11th most in GSC history and the seventh-most in D2 this season.
Â
SERIES HISTORY WITH MC
* UWF and Mississippi College will be meeting for the 16th time on Friday.
* UWF leads the series 11-4. The teams have split the last four meetings with the home team winning each one.
* The Argos are 8-0 all-time in Pensacola. The home team has won 12 of the 15 meetings.
Â
SERIES HISTORY WITH DELTA STATE
* Sunday will mark the 34th time UWF and Delta State have met on the hardwood.
* DSU leads the series 17-16, which dates back to the 1994-95 season. The teams did not play regularly until 2011-12 season as the first 10 contests came as non-conference crossover games or in GSC Tournament play as a result of the teams being in opposite GSC divisions.
* The Argos have won 12 of the last 16 dating back to their GSC Championship win in March 2014.
