VALDOSTA, Ga. – The UWF men's basketball team shot 44 percent from the floor but Valdosta State made six more 3-pointers, resulting in an 83-72 win for the Blazers at The Complex on Saturday.
LaTrell Tate led four Argonauts in double figures with 17 points and six assists.
Wendell Matthews had 16 and Dave Petit-Homme finished with 15 on 6-of-9 shooting with three 3-pointers and seven rebounds.
Daniel Sofield added 14 points, five boards and two steals.
UWF (12-12, 8-12 Gulf South) made seven triples and was 11-of-14 at the free throw line.
The big difference came on the glass where the Blazers had 18 offensive rebounds that they scored 23 second-chance points off of.
Ryan Black led VSU (17-9, 13-7) with a career-high eight 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points. He made six in the first half which kept the Blazers within striking distance, as UWF took a 42-37 lead into the locker room.
Early in the second period, VSU got three-consecutive triples from Cam Hamilton to take a 51-48 edge. The Argos tied it at 51 on three Tate free throws. But then a 10-0 Blazer run gave the home team a 61-51 advantage. UWF was unable to get closer than six the rest of the game.
UWF will play its next two games at home, beginning Thursday night against Auburn Montgomery (13-12, 11-10). The game at the UWF Field House will start at 7:30 p.m.
