HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UWF men's basketball team raced out to an early lead on the road against No. 21 Alabama Huntsville but was unable to maintain the hot shooting, falling to the Chargers, 84-65, at Spragins Hall on Thursday.
UWF (13-14, 9-14 Gulf South) shot 47 percent from the floor and made 12 3-pointers in the contest – the team's second-most in a game this season.
Daniel Sofield made his first five shots and ended with a game-high 26 points and a career-high-tying six triples. Davie Petit-Homme and
LaTrell Tate had 11 to give UWF three in double figures.
UWF made seven of its first nine shots, including a pair of threes from Sofield in building a 17-3 lead six minutes into the contest. UAH answered with a 15-3 run to close within 20-18 six minutes later.
Jared DeHart put the Argos in from 28-25 a few minutes later before the Chargers went on a 15-0 run to build a 12-point lead before settling for a 40-33 advantage at the half.
The home team opened the second half with a 15-7 margin before leading by double digits the remainder of the game.
UAH (23-6, 18-5) remained in a first-place tie with No. 23 West Alabama entering the final game of the regular season on Saturday. The Chargers shot 57 percent from the floor and made 13 treys. Chaney Johnson had 18 points to lead four players in double figure scoring.
UWF will face UWA (22-5, 18-5) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Pruitt Hall in Livingston, Alabama.
