MEMPHIS, Tenn. – UWF had five players score in double figures but dropped a heartbreaker to Christian Brothers, 67-66, at Canale Arena on Saturday.
After
Daniel Sofield made two free throws with 11.7 seconds remaining to put UWF ahead 66-63, CBU's Aiden Ruthsatz hit a contested 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left and was fouled, leading to the Bucs taking a 67-66 lead.
LaTrell Tate's three at the buzzer was off target.
UWF (12-11, 8-11 Gulf South) saw its season-long 5-game winning streak end and remained in eighth place in the league standings with five regular-season games to play.
Tate led the Argonauts with 15 points and Sofield had 13, with fellow starters
David Petit-Homme and Dell Matthews scoring 12 each and
Jared DeHart matching Sofield with three 3-pointers on his way to 10 points.
The game went back and forth in the early portion before UWF outscored the Buc 17-10 in the last 7:30 of the half for a 31-28 lead.
The Argos continued to play well in the second half, building their lead to 54-37 with 11:30 to play on the strength of a 16-2 run. CBU responded with a run of its own and took a 63-59 advantage with two minutes on the clock.
Petit-Homme hit a three on the side and then Matthews muscled his way for two points to put UWF back in front, 64-63 with 1:09 left. After the Argos got a defensive stop, Sofield was fouled and made both of his free throws, leading to Ruthsatz's shot.
UWF shot 55 percent in the second half and 48 percent overall.
CBU (4-17, 4-13) got 22 from Ruthsatz and 17 from Nick Deifel. The duo combined for nine 3-pointers, including six of the Bucs' seven after halftime.
UWF will be off for a week before heading to Valdosta State (16-9, 12-7) next Saturday, Feb. 11. The game at The VSU Complex is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
