UWF Opens Homestand With #14 Montevallo This Weekend

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team looks to continue their winning streak this weekend against the 14-ranked, Montevallo Falcons. The teams will play in a home conference three-game series at Jim Spooner Field beginning on Friday, March 31 at 5:00 p.m. A doubleheader will follow on Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
 
The last time the Argos saw competition against the Falcons was in the 2021 Gulf South Conference Tournament. It was an ending season game for the Argos after losing the to the Falcons, 11-6.
 
About UWF
UWF comes into the weekend with a 16-13 record following a sweep over Shorter in a three-game conference series. The Argos are 8-7 in the Gulf South Conference play and are ranked sixth in the standings with five GSC opponents remaining to take on. The team is also receiving votes in the South Region's NCBWA Poll.
 
UWF is hitting .289 as a team. Four of the team's 16 total homeruns came over the weekend. Darrien McDowell leads the team and is ninth in the GSC with a .387 batting average. His .485 on base percentage is top-10 in the GSC. He leads the team with seven homers – two of which were hit over the weekend against Shorter.
 
The pitching staff has compiled a 3.76 ERA and opponents are hitting .230 off their pitching. The Argos have combined three shutouts and two complete games. Starting pitchers Dalton Neuschwander (5-0), Kade Manderscheid (3-1) and Major Posey (3-2) are in the top-10 leader boards for earned run average. Neuschwander holds the best opposing batting average of .169 in the GSC.
 
On the base paths, the Argos are 22-for-31 in stolen base attempts. Trent Jeffcoat leads the team going 11-for-11.
 
Scouting No.14 Montevallo Falcons
The Falcons are No. 1 in the GSC standings and No. 3 in the NCBWA South Region Poll at a 24-5 overall record. In conference, they are 12-3 – losses came from Alabama Huntsville, Shorter and West Alabama.
 
Over the weekend, the Falcons took on West Alabama in a three-game conference series. Despite winning the series 2-1, the team dropped from No. 5 to No. 14 in this week's NCBWA national rankings.
 
Two players are batting a .426 average. Senior Same Kuchinski has placed 29 consecutive starts and tallies 40 hits. He is tied for third most homeruns in the conference at nine. Catcher Luke Mitchell has started in 22 games for the Falcons. He has totaled 29 hits, nine doubles and five homeruns. On the bag, Mitchell has stolen four bases in six attempts.
 
Starting pitcher JJ Pease is 5-0 on the season. The Pensacola, Fla. native has started in six games and has made seven appearances. With an ERA of 3.25, he has allowed 17 runs on 38 hits in 36.0 innings pitched.
 
Starting pitcher Logan Samuels is also undefeated on the mound. He is 4-0 on the season in eight starts and eight appearances. He holds his opponents to a .267 batting average. In 36.2 total innings pitched, he has an ERA of 3.19 on the season so far.
 
Argos vs. Falcons History
Since 2006, the Argos have a slight 19-17 winning edge in the history record book. The Argos are 9-2 at home but have not played against the Falcons on their home field since 2021.
 
In 2022, the teams played each other four times and the Falcons took all four wins.
 
The latest matchup was in the Gulf South Conference Tournament and the Argos season was over after an 11-6 loss.
