Top Seed Argos Head to Oxford for GSC Championship

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team enters the 2023 Gulf South Conference Championships as the one seed and will open tournament play with eight-seed Delta State.
 
The tournament will take place in Oxford, Alabama at Choccolocco Park. UWF and Delta State will go head-to-head Friday, May 5. The game will begin 30 minutes after the completion of No. 4 Valdosta State and No. 5 West Georgia's 4:00 p.m. battle.
 
UWF has climbed to No. 8 in this week's Collegiate Newspaper poll and remains at No. 17 for the second consecutive week in the NCBWA national rankings with a record of 32-14, 22-8 GSC. The Argos sit below Tampa at No. 2 in the NCAA South Region rankings.
 
TICKETING/PARKING

RECAP OF LAST WEEK
UWF took three wins over Valdosta State on the road and took the Gulf South Conference Regular Season title. The crown was UWF's seventh and third in the last eight years.
 
Josh Prizina made his way back into the starting lineup and hit 3-for-4 in the series finale and totaled a season high five RBI.
 
Darrien McDowell led the Argos with seven hits over the weekend, including a 4-for-6, three RBI game.
 
FERRO NAMED GSC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
In two appearances over the weekend that resulted in a save and a win, Ferro took the GSC's final pitcher of the week honor of the season.
 
In the series opener against the Blazers, he threw three strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched. His performance on the mound in the series finale clinched the Argos the GSC regular season crown. His season high six strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched got him the win and improved to 4-2 on the season.
 
GSC MAJOR AWARDS AND ALL-GSC TEAMS
Head coach Mike Jeffcoat was awarded his sixth GSC Coach of the Year honor. This number ties the second most in the conference.
 
The 3x GSC Pitcher of the Week and 3x NCBWA Pitcher of the Week, Dalton, Neuschwander, was named GSC Pitcher of the Year. He is the fifth player in UWF baseball history to earn this honor.
 
Joining Neuschwander on the All-GSC First Team is starting pitcher Kade Manderscheid, catcher Mike Scordo, and first basemen Darrien McDowell. Placed on All-GSC Second Team is starting pitcher Major Posey, second basemen True Fontenot, and shortstop Trent Jeffcoat.
 
TEAMS IN THE GSC TOURNAMENT
Montevallo is the two seed in the GSC Tournament with a record of 37-12, 21-9 GSC. The Falcons are No. 4 in the NCAA South Region rankings. The team is also No. 13 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 22 in the NCBWA national rankings.
 
Alabama Huntsville is the three seed at a record of 29-18, 20-10 GSC. The Chargers are No. 5 in the NCAA South Region and are receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA poll.
 
Valdosta State has taken the four seed in the tournament at a record of 30-16, 18-12 GSC. The Blazers sit right below the Chargers at No. 6 in the NCAA South Region ranking.
 
No. 5 West Georgia will battle with the Blazers in their tournament opener on Friday, May 5. The Wolves have a record of 32-16, 17-13
 
Shorter has been placed as the sixth seed with a record of 27-20, 16-13.
 
The Lee Flames will make their tournament appearance as the seventh seed at a record of 26-23, 15-15.
 
Lastly, the Delta State Statesmen slid into the eight slot in the tournament and sit at a record of 24-24, 14-15.
 
ABOUT DELTA STATE
Delta State was the top seed in the 2022 GSC Tournament and advanced to the South Regional Tournament before taking two losses and being eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
 
For the 2023 season, four Statesmen are batting a .300 or above average. Outfielder Kirkland Trahan leads the team with a .320 average. He also leads the team in hits (56), homeruns (11) and tied for most doubles with 12. Junior Carson Clowers follows Trahan with 52 hits and 12 doubles for a .306 batting average.
 
Starting pitchers Kameron Koch and Drake Fontenot combine for seven wins and six losses. Koch leads the squad with a 4.58 ERA in 55.0 innings pitched and Fontenot has a 6.44 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched.
 
ARGO VS. STATESMEN HISTORY
UWF won the series 2-1 against Delta State in the regular season. The loss was the most recent matchup with the Argos falling short 4-2. Preston Moore led with two hits in three at bats and scored a run. Tyler Dowdy hit a homer to score UWF's second run.
