PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida cross country begins their 2023 campaign at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama for the Foothills Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville State, on Friday night.

It is the 17
th edition of the meet, with a 4K women's race beginning at 5:45 pm and the men following with a 5K race at 6:20 pm.

29 other teams will compete against the Argonauts on the men's side, while the Argonaut women will face 31 other teams. Two other Gulf South Conference schools, Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo are also competing.

"Our season opener at Jacksonville State is about finding out more about ourselves and what our team can accomplish this season", UWF Head Coach
Caleb Carmichael said.  "It also gives us a chance to see where we stand so early in the season."
Zach Fenton leads a group of five returners in the men's 5K, with the Argos adding five newcomers, with all five runners being from the Northwest Florida area.  Fenton currently holds the three fastest times in the 8K in Argonaut history, setting the pace with a 24:23 mark at last year's UAH Charger Invitational.

Carmichael returns 7 runners from last season on the women's side, including Chloe Rook, who was the three-time GSC freshman of the week, and adds two newcomers in Ambrea Hobbs and Olivia Noack.  The Argos finished fifth in the GSC last season, the highest since 2018.

"I'm excited to unleash group onto the scene and I think we have teams that will the surprise other teams in our conference and region", Carmichael remarked.Â
