#4 UWF Prepares for Battle with Shorter and #17 Lee in Home Conference Matchups

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- No. 4 UWF prepares for their opening home conference weekend against Shorter and No. 17 Lee. All games will be played at Shoreline Field in Gulf Breeze, Fla.
 
The Argos will open the weekend against Shorter on Friday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. and will conclude the weekend with a top-20 matchup over Lee on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 3:00 p.m.
 
Recap at Spring Hill
UWF soared over the Badgers, 4-0 to extend their winning record to 6-0-1. The Argos are on a four-game winning streak.
 
UWF was led by Mya Swinton who tallied two goals and an assist. Swinton opened the game with a goal in the nineth minute and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute. This was her second game in a row to score a two-goal game.
 
Emma Beltz and Emilie Dueck Doerkesen contributed to the attack and recorded a goal each to bring it to a 4-0 final.
 
Swinton in the GSC
Swinton leads the GSC with 16 points. Her six goals and four assists are also the most in the conference in both categories.
 
Swinton is tied with 11 players across the nation as the 14th highest goal scorer in division II. Her six goals in seven games is the 18th best goals per game percentage (0.86).
 
Argos in the Polls
UWF stands at No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the second week in a row. The Argos have consistently stayed in the top-25 since the preseason poll.
 
Additionally, the program is in its fourth consecutive week in the top-10 ranking and third consecutive week as top-5.
 
About the Shorter Hawks
The Hawks are 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in GSC. The lone win came in the beginning of September in a non-conference matchup against Brewton-Parker College. The 3-1 victory involved two goals from Jadyn Goddard and a single goal by Juliana Torres.
 
Goddard and Torres are joined by freshman Kate Crunkleton to lead the Hawks with two goals apiece. Torres leads the team in points (5) with an assist to her name.
 
Shorter is currently last in the GSC standings with zero conference points.
 
Argo vs. Hawk History
Since 2012, the Argos have won 10 straight matches over Shorter. UWF averages 3.8 goals a game and has scored a total of 38 goals.
 
Last season, UWF soared over the Hawks, 10-0. This was the largest margin of victory since beginning competition 11 years ago.
 
About the Lee Flames
Lee is currently leading the GSC with 10 conference points. The Flames are 5-0-3 overall and 3-0-1 in GSC.
 
Before their most recent match ended in a scoreless draw over Montevallo, the Flames were on a three-game winning streak. Lee shutout West Alabama (3-0), Alabama Huntsville (3-0) and Auburn Montgomery (5-0).
 
The team is led by sophomore, Alaysia Nye. Nye has totaled five goals and an assist. Defender and GSC Preseason selection, Kate Dirkse, follows with three goals on 14 shots.
 
Goalkeepers Abby Whitcomb and Josie Taylor have both made appearances in the box. Whitcomb leads the squad with six starts and 495 minutes. Whitcomb has allowed two goals while making 18 saves.
 
The goalkeepers combine for five shutouts.
 
Argo vs. Flame History
The Argo-Flame history goes back and has always been a close rivalry. The Flames have a 7-6 overall record edge over UWF. Two matches have resulted in ties.
 
Starting in 2018, the Flames won four straight matches. The streak ended in 2022 when UWF took a 1-0 victory on the road. Manami Okada scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute.
 
The team's saw each other two more times in the 2022 season and went 1-1. The Flames took the win over the Argos in the semifinals of the GSC Tournament. UWF was haunted by an 88th minute goal that gave Lee a 2-1 victory to advance to the GSC Tournament finals.
 
UWF got their revenge in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in another 1-0 win. The Argos controlled the game and outshot Lee, 12-4.
 
Maciah Lipsey recorded 12 saves in the combined three games last season.
