PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argonauts (11-4, 5-0 GSC) dominated the stat sheet by having three players hit over .600 and holding Christian Brothers (2-14, 1-4 GSC) under .100 as a team to run away with their eighth straight win and 15th straight over the Lady Bucs 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-10).
The Argos pulled away with a third set in which the team combined for its lowest hitting percentage of the match with 0.333 and held CBU to a 0.0 frame with just six kills and six of its 17 errors. The Buccaneers reached its highest offensive production in a 0.111 second frame and gained nine of their 22 total kills. UWF killed 39 attacks for the afternoon with only six miscues, including just one to 12 kills in a second frame that put it firmly in the driver's seat, and held the guests to just 22 kills on two more attacks.
A key early run for UWF was a string of eight consecutive points to take a 9-1 lead in the opening set.
Bailee Sterling,
Caiden Largent and
Avery Rodgers came up with kills off assists from
Izabelle Sanchez, Rodgers and Sterling split up a block and
Annie Monaco hit two aces to take the commanding lead. When CBU pulled within 14-7, kills came from
Jenna Zydlo,
Damyah Joyner and Monaco, and
Yomaris Rodriguez added an ace. The dagger in the frame came when, in addition to kills by Sterling and Monaco, Sanchez got an ace herself and skipped the set to fake out the defense and register a kill.
In the second period, Christian Brothers pulled within two at 15-13, but Rodgers gained a kill ahead of a pair of Buccaneer miscues and Zydlo and Monaco alternated kills to put their team up 22-14. Then, with a narrow 6-4 lead,
Gabi Moulton and Monaco passed up sets to send balls to the hardwood. In addition to an ace by
Jacque Martin and a Joyner kill, Zydlo and Monaco shared three blocks in the 9-0 run. The last three kills to end it for UWF came from the arm of Rodgers.
Sterling had seven kills without an error for a .700 hitting performance, her highest mark as an Argonaut and the second-highest of her college career after a .727 outing in 2021 Nebraska-Kearney against Missouri Western. Rodgers also did not commit an error and finished with 10 kills for a .625 offensive day. Zydlo also reached that mark on her six kills while assisting on four blocks. Monaco was next with seven kills for .417, which she reached in addition to nine digs, three aces and three block assists.
Meg Brackhan scooped 13 attacks, and Sanchez assisted 16 kills.
The Argos play next on Tuesday at 6 pm when they will try for a season sweep of West Alabama.
