BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team was ranked tied for 11th in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches poll that was released by the GSC on Wednesday.
UWF finished with 24 points in the rankings. Alabama Huntsville was named the No. 1 team in the poll with 115 points and six first place votes.
Last season the Argos finished 8-20 overall and 6-18 in the GSC. UWF added nine new players to the roster this season, including three who are on the GSC Newcomer Watchlist. On that list is
Ja'Ron Briggs Jr.,
Shay Davis, and
Zondrick Garrett.
Briggs Jr joins the Argos from Cloud County Community College where the team won 21 games last season. The 6-foot-4 junior guard started in all 32 games for Cloud County averaging 13.2 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Davis spent last season with Western Illinois University and saw minutes in 19 games. The 6-foot guard scored a season-high 22 points in a game vs Hannibal-LaGrange.
Garrett played in 20 games and started 11 for Texas A&M Commerce last season. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 6.6 points per game and was third on the team in blocks with 25 on the season.
UWF will play in an exhibition at Florida State University on Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. ET/ 2 p.m. CT. The Argos tipoff the regular season on Nov. 8 in Valdosta, Ga. at the South Region Crossover.
