CLINTON, Miss. – A hot day at the Choctaw Trails didn't stop
Zach Fenton and the UWF men's cross country team from showing out at the Belhaven Invitational Saturday morning.
Fenton once again shined in his third race of his redshirt senior season, clocking the 10
th fastest 8K time in program history at 24:53.66. The Sykesville, MD native now claims eight of the top ten fastest 8K times in program history, including the fastest seven times.
In all three meets this season, Fenton has finished as the fastest DII runner to compete. At the Choctaw Trails Saturday, Fenton finished first in a field of 124 runners.
UWF placed fourth out of 11 total teams Saturday, with only six runners competing. The Argos' first five all finished within the top 50, And all six finished within the top 65 out of 124. UWF finished behind fellow Gulf South Conference school Mississippi College, but finished in front of D1 schools Mississippi Valley and Jackson State, as well as nationally-ranked junior college No. 22 Coastal Alabama and the hosting Belhaven University.
Grant Chastain continues to impress in his freshman year, finishing as the second fastest UWF runner for the second straight meet. His 26:39.75 official 8K time placed him at 17
th overall.
Parker Nunley also finished inside the top 25 for the second race in a row, clocking a 27:03.54 8K time. He hasn't finished outside the top 30 in a race in 2024.
Carson King finished 36
th overall with a final time of 27:45.01.
Nathan Deboutez finished ten spots later at 46 running 28:29.51, and
Gavin Schulte completes the Argos times at 30:12.88.
Up next, the Argos head to Romeoville, IL for the Lewis University D2 Crossover for their final regular season race of 2024.
After that, they head right back to a familiar place, as the
new site for the 2024 GSC Championships will be right back in the Choctaw Trails. Thanks to the Belhaven Invitational, the Argos have now run the course once this season, giving them an advantage in preparation for the course. Finally, the Argos will have a crack at the NCAA regionals on Nov. 9 in Huntsville, AL.
