Argos Blow Out West Alabama in Seventh Straight Sweep

UWF Outhits UWA by Almost .400 in Final Road Match of Regular Season

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - UWF volleyball (23-5, 18-0 GSC) won its 18th straight match and seventh consecutive via sweep (25-13, 25-6, 25-20) against West Alabama (2-26, 0-18 GSC) at Pruitt Hall on Saturday afternoon. The result is also the Argos' eighth straight sweep of the Tigers, as UWA last took a set on West Florida in 2019.

The Argos scored 42 kills with just 10 errors for a .410 hitting percentage, their second-highest output of the season. UWF also had one of its best performances of the season on defense, forcing a season-best 19 kills and the third-lowest percentage by a UWF opponent this season, .012. The lowest was the -.012 by West Alabama in Pensacola last month. The Tigers' leading scorer had just five kills. UWF committed just 10 errors to 18 by UWA and led in aces 6-1, assists 39-17 and digs 32-20.

In her first start as an Argonaut, Nikki Deslatte tallied eight kills on 13 swings for a .538 percentage with an ace and two block assists. Damyah Joyner was just behind with seven kills and a block assist. Caiden Largent scored six kills on just eight attacks for .750 production with three digs. Jenna Zydlo was six-for-six attacking. Emily Breazeale also registered six kills on a .455 day. Annie Monaco had three kills with two digs and a block assist. Camryn Brooks was three-for-three hitting with three digs.

Gabi Moulton scored 22 assists as her day was finished early while serving four aces. Meg Brackhan put up 12 digs and four assists. Izabelle Sanchez had nine assists, five digs and an ace. Service runs were crucial to the outcome of the match.

The Argos took their first lead with a 3-0 run with kills by Joyner and Moulton and a Tiger error after trailing 2-1. Jenna Zydlo added consecutive kills to make it 6-3. After UWA scratched a point back, Breazeale scored two kills that bookended one from Deslatte. The first set saw a 9-0 scoring run that gave UWF a 17-5 advantage in which Moulton was the server, which saw Moulton score two of her aces and kills by Breazeale, Deslatte and Brooks. The last two points of the set were off kills by Brooks and Breazeale.

The first five rallies of the second frame saw Deslatte serve and UWF take a 4-1 lead off two Zydlo kills and one from Largent. Three consecutive kills by Brooks, Breazeale and Deslatte made the lead 10-3. It was here that the largest run of the afternoon occurred. The Argos tied their longest run of the season with a 12-0 span, also accomplished in the win at Valdosta State. The first seven serves were by Moulton, where she scored her second pair of aces, Deslatte and Joyner scored kills while splitting on a block and the Tigers committed two attack errors after a service miscue started the run. Sanchez subbed in for Moulton at the service line for the next five rallies, in which Deslatte and Monaco split a block and Monaco and Joyner added kills. At the end of the scoring run, the Argos led 22-4.

Monaco opened the scoring in the third with a kill. Largent scored a kill for UWF's third point and Deslatte served an ace to put her team up 4-1. The teams went back and forth before a four-point service run by Sanchez in which Largent, Deslatte and Joyner provided kills to go up 12-7. Joyner later added back-to-back kills for points 14 and 15 to restore a five-point lead. Largent, Deslatte, Monaco and Joyner registered kills and Sanchez an ace for a 5-2 run as UWF went up 23-17. West Alabama scratched two points back before a Largent kill made it match point, and after one more kill from the Tigers, Delaney Hanowell finished it off with her second kill.

The Argos return home for its final matches of the season on Parents Weekend, starting with a contest against Lee on Friday, November 15 at 6 pm and ending on Saturday, the 16th, with Senior Day against Trevecca at 1 pm.
