PENSACOLA, Fla.
– UWF Softball (9-7, 0-3) returns to the friendly confines of the UWF Softball Complex as they get set to host the Spring Hill Badgers (1-8) and the UAH Chargers (13-5, 1-2) at the Fork this weekend.

The Argos have been on a two-week road stretch, most recently returning from their GSC opener against West Alabama. UWF dropped all three games to the Tigers and looks to rebound against the Badgers and Chargers this week.

First up is Spring Hill from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, who makes the hour-long drive from Mobile for a Wednesday doubleheader. For the weekend slate, Alabama-Huntsville will be the first home GSC series of the season at the UWF Softball Complex.

The Argos have plenty of history with both of these opponents, with UWF having an all-time record lead over Spring Hill 24-6 but being on the losing end of all-time record with Alabama-Huntsville 23-44. UWF has most recently lost to both of these teams, with Spring Hill taking the most recent game 3-4 in Pensacola last season. UWF is on a five-game skid to the Chargers dating back to April of 2022.

Prolific Hitting vs Stifling Pitching

This weekend's matchup between the Argos and the Chargers features two of the best hitting and pitching teams in the conference. Alabama-Huntsville boasts a conference-best team 1.89 ERA with three of the top four pitchers in ERA in the GSC belonging to the Chargers' bullpen. Meanwhile, UWF is top ten in Division II softball in doubles with 32, also leading the GSC. They are still second in the conference in home runs (25) and third in slugging percentage (.540).

Madelyn Vasquez continues to shine in her final year with UWF, as the grad senior is 8th in the conference Madelyn Vasquez continues to shine in her final year with UWF, as the grad senior is 7th in the conference with a .468 batting average. Her 22 hits places her at ninth in the conference, and the Milton, FL native is still riding an 11-game hit streak.

Newcomer Jessie Baughan has also begun to make a name for herself in the Argos batting order. The North Alabama transfer added two home runs last weekend against West Alabama to now lead UWF with six. Her .875 slugging percentage is a team-best mark.

Scouting Spring Hill:

The Badgers have many common opponents with UWF so far this season, with Spring Hill falling victim to a tough non-conference schedule. The Badgers attended the Gulf Shores Invitational where they faced Valdosta State, No. 1 North Georgia, and West Georgia, as well as future GSC opponents UWF will face later in the season such as Montevallo and Auburn-Montgomery.

Rycca Hinton and Airyonna Weaver have been the most productive hitters for Spring Hill so far this season, with Hinton earning six runs on ten hits with five RBI and Weaver providing five runs on 11 hits and six RBI.
Leighanna Turk and Emily Phillips are the two main pitchers for the badgers with Turk totaling the most innings of the two with 36. Turk also leads the duo in strikeouts (12) while Phillips leads the squad having only allowed six earned runs on 17 innings pitched for a .247 ERA.

Scouting Alabama-Huntsville:

UAH was the preseason favorite to win the GSC, earning 11 first place votes in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. They currently sit in the back half of the GSC standings early in league play.

The Chargers are currently on a five-game win streak having dominated a tournament in Evansville, Indiana last weekend. UAH outscored opponents 41-5 over its five games in Evansville, rebounding after dropping their opening series 1-2 to No. 7 Mississippi College.

As mentioned, their pitching has been the highlight of the Chargers' 2024 campaign so far. Grace O'Berry (3-1) leads the GSC in ERA with a 1.67 and only eight runs allowed in 29.1 innings of pitching. Katie Bracken (6-0) leads UAH with 56 strikeouts and is second on the team with a 1.84 ERA. Both marks rank second in the GSC. Josie Thompson (3-4) is fourth in the GSC with a 2.08 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.

Alexa Douthitt has been the Chargers' most productive batter, with the sophomore claiming the third best batting average in the GSC at .510. Douthitt and GSC hits leader Lawren Hayes are a major reason why UAH is second in the conference in that metric, with 162 hits 18 games into the season.  Kaylee Vaught, Laura Harbin, and Sadie Thompson have also been highly productive, with each of them having double digit totals in multiple major hitting stats.
