Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The University of West Florida baseball team fell one-run short in Wednesday's non-conference game at home against Georgia Southwestern.
After falling drastically in Tuesday's game, the Argos (17-8) had a different mentality in Wednesday's matchup.
In the ninth inning on two outs, UWF trailed 9-8. With loaded bases, the game-winning run was in their grasp. The Canes (21-7) got out of the inning with a strikeout to give UWF their second loss of the two-game series.
UWF recorded double digit hits with
Riley Parker leading the way with three.
The Canes had a five-run lead before UWF scored their first run. In the third inning,
Darrien McDowell hit an RBI outfield single to bring momentum for his team.
Each team scored a run in the fourth, including a season first home run for
Mark Townsend.
The Canes answered with a homerun themselves in the fifth inning to bring the score to 7-2. It turned into a battle of home runs as
Jadon Fryman sailed a two-run homer in the bottom half of the fifth.
Trent Jeffcoat finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to shorten the Canes lead to 7-5.
After runs being scored in four consecutive frames, both teams were shutout in the sixth and seventh inning.
Georgia Southwestern grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the eighth but the Argos brought three men home in the bottom half that put the game at a one-run difference.
Sitting at a 9-8 score in favor of the Canes, the Argos saw hope as they loaded the bases. Two strikeouts and a fly out in the ninth inning closed the game and gave UWF the loss.
Major Posey led on the mound with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.
The Argos will head on the road to Delta State for a three-game conference series. UWF will start with a Saturday doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. following with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
