UWF Travels for First Full Weekend of GSC Play

Argos Look to Build on 2-1 Finish in GSC/Lone Star Crossover

PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF men's tennis (4-4, 1-1 GSC) is set to begin another weekend on the road as it faces its first full weekend of GSC play. The Argos look to build off a strong weekend in the GSC/Lone Star Crossover Tournament in which they went 2-1, rebounding from a loss to No. 12 UT Tyler to defeat Cameron and Midwestern State.

The action begins with a Saturday morning match on March 9 at 10 am at Montevallo (4-3, 2-0 GSC). The Falcons, coming in at No. 37 in the latest ITA Division II rankings released this week, are led by sixth-year head coach Tanner Stancil. The Argos own the series with a 9-0 record and have put up sweeps in the last four meetings, including a 5-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 2023 GSC Championship. UWF won the previous match between the sides 7-0 in Pensacola for a season sweep of the Falcons last year, the third time it has done that in program history.

The Argos stay in the state of Alabama as they head to Livingston to face West Alabama (2-4, 1-0 GSC) for another 10 am match on Sunday, March 10. The Tigers also played in the GSC/Lone Star Crossover, finishing with a 1-2 mark with a win and defeating Cameron 4-2 to go with a 7-0 conference win at Shorter last month. UWA is led by Jeff Beaman, in his ninth season at the helm after coaching for nine years at D1 Idaho and playing in college at Alabama A&M. The Argos completely dominate the series that spans from the 2006 season to now 24-0. UWF won the last meeting in 2023 5-2 in Pensacola. Its closest margins of victory over the Tigers have been a pair of 4-3 results in the last two matches in Livingston.

In the latest ITA rankings being released this week, the No. 10 Argos boast three players who have placed in the national singles rankings in No. 33 Sebastian Sotelo, No. 46 Sebastian Rondon and No. 67 Diego Duran. UWA brings in Lucas Hammond to singles, who is tied at No. 65. The Argos also lay claim to the No. 35 doubles pairing in the nation in Albin Ekenros and Duran.
