PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF men's tennis (16-4, 8-1 GSC) heads to Montgomery, Ala., for the GSC Championship this weekend from April 27-29. The Argos claimed the top seed in winning the regular season conference crown, and they currently No. 4 in both the ITA National Rankings and the NCAA D2 South Regional Rankings with a 10-3 in-region record. They will take on 8-seed Delta State (3-15, 2-7 GSC) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 10 am at O'Connor Tennis Center.
Â
UWF is led by a pair of nationally ranked singles players in No. 22
Sebastian Rondon, who owns a 16-3 overall record and 9-0 conference mark, and No. 34
Sebastian Sotelo with a 12-6 overall mark and 6-3 record in GSC play. The pair has combined for three GSC Player of the Week awards. They also have 10-7 and 10-6 overall doubles records, coming out to 7-2 and 6-1 in GSC play, respectively.
Albin Ekenros has also won a conference player of the week award, as he has had a 15-3 season in singles, 7-2 against conference competition, with a 12-7 overall and 8-2 GSC doubles records. Â
Â
When it comes to weekly awards, no one has touched
Diego Duran in that category, as the freshman from San Salvador, El Salvador, has racked up five GSC Freshman of the Week awards. He has earned the recognition, as he has a 14-1 mark in singles play with the lone loss coming due to retirement at Mississippi College two months ago. He is 10-0 since then and the team has not lost since that match in Clinton, Miss., and one at UT Tyler on March 1, making an active 14-match winning streak for the Argos after a 2-4 start. Duran is also 10-5 overall and 7-2 in GSC play in doubles. Â
Â
In doubles play, Sotelo and
Tomas Leston teamed up for the first time in March and boast records of 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference. For their efforts, they are ranked No. 42 in the ITA Doubles Rankings. Additionally, Rondon and Duran have paired up five teams in the last six matches, starting with the then-No. 9 Argos' 4-3 takedown of No. 3 Valdosta State. They won their matchup that day and are still undefeated. Â
Â
As UWF begins its quest for its 15th GSC title, it has to first dispatch Will Irvin's Delta State squad for the second time this season. UWF swept the Statesmen 7-0 three weeks ago at home to clinch the regular season championship, winning its 23rd match against DSU in as many meetings, and will now look to get a 24th. Overall, the Argos are looking to give coach
Derrick Racine his 13th conference title on the men's side and his 29th overall during his time in Pensacola. Â
