PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida Men's Cross Country showed out at home Friday morning, securing a second place finish out of nine teams in the men's eight-kilometer race with the help of another record time from senior
Zach Fenton.
Fenton's official time of 25:52.3 is a new UWF Cross Country Course record and is the first 8K time to be run under 26 minutes on the course. Fenton's record time and first place finish comes just two weeks after running the third fastest 8K time in program history at the UNA Invitational.
"We challenged Zach over the summer, I thought if he accepted the challenge and ran the mileage…these kinds of things would happen," head coach
Caleb Carmichael said.
"Running today the way he did on this course, by himself, breaking the course record, its phenomenal…I'm just so proud of the kid."
The Argos came in just behind the Ouachita Baptist Tigers, who claimed the first overall team finish. UWF did manage to beat out multiple nationally ranked DII junior college programs in NJCAA No. 11 Coastal Alabama Community College and No. 25 Enterprise State Community College.
UWF also finished ahead of local cross country programs in Spring Hill College and the University of Mobile.
Freshman
Grant Chastain also put up another impressive performance in just his second 8K race as an Argo, placing sixth out of 91 runners competing with an official time of 27:14.20.
Two other Argos finished inside the top 25, those being
Parker Nunley at 15 (28:03.00) and
Nathan Deboutez at 17 (28:10.40).
Carson King finished at 26 with a 29:19.50 time,
Cademon Galloway clocked a 30:35.60 to finish at 47, and
Gavin Schulte rounds out the Argos with a 30:51.90 to place at 50.
UWF men's cross country is back in action on Friday, Sep. 27 when they travel to Tallahassee for the Florida State Cross Country Invitational.
