FLORENCE, ALA. – The first race of 2024 is in the books for UWF Men's Cross Country, as the Argos placed fourth out of nine teams at the University of North Alabama Invitational Saturday in Florence, AL.
Senior
Zach Fenton's eight-kilometer race time of 24:37.95 is the third fastest time recorded by an Argo, with Fenton now owning the records for the top seven fastest times in program history. Fenton placed third out of 82 runners at the UNA Invitational and was first amongst DII runners.
West Florida was second among division II teams at the meet, coming in behind fellow GSC team Union University as well as North Alabama and Jacksonville State in the men's 8K. The Argos recorded an average team time of 26:24 to place fourth of nine teams. The meet also featured Alabama A&M, Northwest Shoals Community College, Calhoun Community College, Northwest Mississippi, and Lane College.
Outside of Fenton, Freshmen
Grant Chastain and
Xander McLaughlin ran the next two fastest times of the Argos in their first 8K race of their career. Mclaughlin ran the second fastest time of the Argos with a 26:16 .87 and Chastain ran just 11 seconds behind at 26:27.13. The freshmen duo placed 19
th and 20
th respectively.
Carson King,
Parker Nunley, and
Nathan Deboutez all placed inside the top 30, with King running a 27:20.89, Nunley recording a 27:21.78, and Deboutez finishing just after at 27:33.67.
Cademon Galloway was the final runner for the Argos on Saturday, finishing with a 29:21.69.
UWF men's cross country is back in action once again on Friday, Sep. 20 as they host the Argonaut Invitational at the UWF Cross Country Course.
