Argos Open 2025 Season With Shutout Win Over Barry

Guffey, Mergen pitch shutout, Brice homers on opening day

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 2025 UWF Softball season started with a bang as the Argos blanked the visiting Barry Buccaneers 5-0 in the season opener at The Fork. 
 
UWF (1-0) earned their first victory over Barry (0-1) since 2022 and snapped a four-game skid to the Bucs. They now improve to 7-13 all-time vs Barry. 
 
College of Central Florida transfer pitcher Haley Guffey (1-0) pitched five innings in her debut, posting five strikeouts and a single walk with no runs. Freshman Nicole Mergen contributed two innings in the shutout, allowing a single hit and a strikeout.
 
Emma Brice added her 23rd home run of her career as an Argo, bringing home Hannah Harper to score the first runs of the 40th season of Argonaut softball. Harper added a triple in the effort and led with another single and two runs. Brice and Erin Moon had two RBI a piece, making up the bulk of the scoring for UWF.
 
UWF 5, Barry 0 Highlights
 
Both teams were deadlocked for the first two and a half innings, with the Argos stranding three Barry runners on base. In the bottom of the second, Hannah Harper finally got on base for the Argos with a single base hit. Emma Brice continued her reputation as a dangerous power hitter for the Argos into her junior season, launching a home run to the right center wall and scoring Hannah Harper. 
 
Gianna Guerriero singled to get on base, stole another, and was brought home by and Moon single to right field in the third inning. Moon once again brought Guerriero home in the 5th on a ground out to push the Argos' lead to 4-0. 
 
Finally in the sixth, Jessie Baughan hit a sac-fly RBI to left field to bring home Harper for her second run of the game. The Argos' defense turned a double play to close out the game in the seventh, sealing the 5-0 victory on opening night.
