Argos Secure 2nd Place Finish at St. Simons Intercollegiate

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Battling tough weather conditions which changed the tournament format the UWF women's golf team used a consistent three rounds of golf at the St. Simons Intercollegiate to place second overall in the 18-team field.

The Argos remained in second place throughout the duration of the 54 holes, finishing with a team score of 890 (+26). The weather at King and Prince Golf Club led to poor scoring conditions that forced nearly every team into higher scores, but the Argos held strong throughout the three rounds trailing only Wingate who won the tournament. The average individual round score for the tournament was 78.54, six strokes over par.

Due to inclement weather leading up to the tournament and fear of more bad weather during play the format of the tournament was adjusted to play 18 holes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The changed caused for UWF to miss a practice round on the course which usually occurs on Sunday followed by 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday for typical format. But West Florida didn't waiver and came out in the first round playing well.

"You know I have to give the team a lot of credit," said head coach Kristen Dorsey. "We were feeling pretty good after leaving Lander finding our rhythm and the team did a great job preparing this week leading up to St. Simon. I think that's why we were able to come out the gate firing."

Freshman Lauren Patterson led the Argos in the opening round with a one-under 71. She was just one of four players in the field to go under par after the first 18 holes. Isabela Urruchua came in at even par while Samantha Schultz was just three over and Millie Thompson four over.

Thompson led UWF through the final two rounds with a 73 in round two and 71 in the third round to finish at +4 for the tournament. Joining her with the same score was Urruchua who went 74-74 in her last two rounds. The pair tied for eighth place overall.

Day three became the most challenging day on the scoring front for the Argos as the team went +11. Third place finisher Lander began to close the gap on UWF during the round, but the team rallied to hold onto the second-place finish. Thompson provided the senior leadership for the Argos with three straight birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15. She had six birdies on the day.

UWF will be back on the course on Monday, Oct. 13 for the 12th Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Ga.
