UWF Takes Down Pensacola Christian in Home Opener

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida cruised to a 102-67 win over Pensacola Christian on Tuesday afternoon in the first home game of the season for the Argos.

UWF used a successful shooting day from beyond the arc to put distance between them and the visiting Eagles. The Argos knocked down 15 3-point shots with 10 different players recording a triple.

Leading the offense for West Florida was Elijah Wyche who finished with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Anthony Igiede added 15 points, 4 assists, and a pair of steals in 20 minutes of action. Ryan Payne had 13 points and Shahar Lazar scored 12 to round out the double figure scorers for the Argos.

Holding a big halftime lead (55-32) UWF opened the second half with a 10-0 run capped off by a Payne to Wyche alley oop much to the delight of a crowd filled with K-12 students who were attending the game for "Fieldtrip with the Argos" day. The students and fans got to enjoy watching a few players who played locally in high school.

"I like to try to keep local guys if we can," head coach Justin Mann said. "There's a lot of good talent around here and we have to find the right ones that fit us…The reason why we did this (playing against Pensacola Christian) was because of the community."

UWF benefited from its 19 forced turnovers while only committing 8 turnovers themselves. The Argos scored 34 points off turnovers.

The Argos are now 6-1 to start the season. The team is just two wins shy of last year's win total. UWF will head into Gulf South Conference play on Thursday when they host Alabama Huntsville at 7:30 p.m.

"It's go time," Mann said. "The new season is here. I told our guys that after today it's conference time. We have a chance to be on home court for five in a row which we are really looking forward to."
