PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida came up short in the opening Gulf South Conference series with Montevallo on Friday and Saturday, dropping the last two games after a series opening 10-1 win.
GAME 1
UWF scored at least one run in five different innings to open the series with a 10-1 win.
Brantley Willis went 3-for-5 at bat with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Argos.
West Florida got on the board in the second inning when
Brett Rowell scored after
Alex Urias was walked with the bases loaded. The Argos scored another run two batters later when
Cade Easterbrook was walked, bringing
Zack Stokes home.
The Argos gave up one run in the top of the sixth but responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth and added three more runs in the eighth inning.
Dalton Neuschwander earned his second win of the season in his best start of the year. The senior pitched five innings giving up just two hits and striking out six.
GAME 2
The seven-inning second game which was scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon, but changed due to Saturday's forecasted weather went well into the night on Friday. Montevallo won the game 7-2 in 13 innings.
The Falcons gained the lead in the top of the ninth when Evan Radford homered on a ball that hit the foul pole and over the fence. The homer gave the visitors a 2-1 lead.
UWF answered back to extend the game and put themselves in great position to win the game.
Ethan Babcock doubled to lead off the inning.
Dom Presto then laid down a perfect bunt to advance Babcock to third and find himself safe a first. Easterbrook then singled to right field to bring Babcock in to score tying the game at 2-2. Montevallo intentionally walked
Jadon Fryman to load the bases with no outs, but the Argos were unable to capitalize.
After a quiet few innings, Montevallo scored five runs in the 13
th inning and UWF couldn't find the answer.
Six different pitchers hit the mound for the Argos.
Colton Dorsey got his first start of the season and went five innings with seven strikeouts.
GAME 3
Saturday's single game went in favor of Montevallo, 4-1. Neither team could get the bats going early in the contest. UWF had just three hits through the first five innings and the Falcons had two hits in the same span.
Montevallo broke out in the sixth inning with three hits leading to two runs.
UWF scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the ninth when Stokes singled to score Rowell who had double to lead off the inning. It was the only run the Argos could generate.
Grant Adams pitched six innings in the loss with seven strikeouts.
UP NEXT
The Argos (4-5, 1-2 GSC) will play a single game against Spring Hill on Tuesday. The game is schedule for 5 p.m. at Jim Spooner Field.
