BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference announced its weekly tennis awards today for performances in matches from February 10-16. Senior
Albin Ekenros won his second career GSC Player of the Week award for his play over the last weekend, in which he went undefeated to help UWF go 3-0 and claim its first ITA DII National Men's Team Indoor Championship.
The senior, ranked No. 43 in the ITA Preseason National Singles Rankings, went 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. On Friday in the quarterfinal match against 2-seed Flagler, the Swede tied the match 2-2 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Filip Kana to help the 7-seed Argos come back and win 4-2 to advance to the winner's bracket.
In the semis on Saturday against 3-seed Barry, Ekenros went on to score the Argos' first point of the day as they trailed 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Thomas Machado as the Argos came from behind once again to win 4-3 and advance to Sunday's title match.
There, against 8-seed Washburn, Ekenros was inserted in doubles for the first time this season. He and
Miguel Cabrera sealed the doubles point for UWF, defeating the No. 11 doubles pairing in the nation in Vasek Schneider and Tommy Cecchetti 6-3. He then put his team up 2-0 on the way to the perfect 4-0 sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Matthew Earle.
The weekly award is his first since last March, as part of a huge junior season in which he took home Second Team All-GSC honors.
The Argos only have a short time to celebrate their title, as they head to Memphis, Tenn., this weekend for a pair of neutral-site nonconference contests against Southern Arkansas on Friday and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday as well as a GSC road contest versus Christian Brothers earlier Saturday.
