PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up a full weekend of competition the ITA South Regionals Championship. The tournament featured four draws: men's and women's singles and doubles. The Argonauts had eight athletes total competing, all advancing within the bracket.
West Florida placed
Diego Duran,
Rafael Sabio,
Vicente Couto, and
Sebastian Rondon in the men's singles draw. Duran put up a valent effort, defeating competitors from Lynn, Embry Riddle, Lee, and West Alabama before ultimately falling short to Barry in the finals. Sabio also made an incredible push, advancing to the semifinals by knocking off Florida Southern, AUM, and Lynn. Couto and Rondon each advanced to Round 32, defeating Delta State and Montevallo, respectively.
In women's singles, Carlota Verda advanced to the finals after winning against Delta State, AUM, Lee, Nova Southeastern, and West Alabama. Aline Midori and Sandra Recueno Tarin each advanced to Round 32, while
Guadalupe Martinez made it to Round 16.
Rondon and Duran combined their abilities in doubles competition, making it all the way to the finals. The pair defeated Lynn, Mississippi College, and Embry-Riddle before coming up short against Saint Leo.
Samuel Vidales and Marc Neyelov made up the other Argonaut pair, whom defeated Spring Hill in the opening round prior to falling to Nova Southeastern in Round 16.
The women's doubles side featured Verda and Tarin, as well as Martinez and Midori. Verda and Tarin made a run to the semifinals whilst Martinez and Midori made it to Round 16. The Argos' ace pair defeated Valdosta State, AUM, and Barry, while the latter pair beat Spring Hill.
Across all four brackets, West Florida players displayed strong early-season form and competitiveness in extended rallies and tiebreak situations. The Argonauts will look to build on this experience as they continue fall play over the coming weeks.
